Tabuk Region Mountains Embraced By Snow And Clouds: A Natural Tourist Destination

Each year on December 11, International Mountain Day is observed globally. This day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2003 to highlight the vital role mountains play in our lives and their importance in promoting sustainable development. Saudi Arabia, with its diverse mountain ranges and highlands, showcases both scenic beauty and geological variety, contributing significantly to sustainable mountain tourism.

The Kingdom has seen a notable increase in tourism, largely due to its mountain resorts and various sites that draw visitors worldwide. These tourists are keen to explore Saudi Arabia's archaeological heritage and historical sites. The Tabuk region stands out with its prominent mountains and highlands, which form the most significant part of its landscape.

According to Tabuk University's scientific encyclopaedia, these mountains cover about one-third of the region's total area. They originated during the tertiary geological period alongside the formation of the Red Sea gully due to rifting movements. Over time, erosion processes have further shaped these formations.

The Tabuk region's mountains are known as the "Midian" mountains. They form the northern part of the western highlands and are complexly interconnected with steep slopes exceeding 60 degrees. These mountains span various geological formations.

The eastern section features cross-layered sandstone formations with high-altitude peaks like Jabal Al-Lawz reaching approximately 2,600 meters above sea level. In contrast, the Hejaz Mountains in central and southern Tabuk are characterized by rugged peaks with similar steep slopes interspersed with valleys.

Tabuk's high mountains, diverse geology, and historical significance not only offer economic value but also attract investments and visionary projects. This has established it as a unique natural tourist destination within Saudi Arabia.
