Tabreed's Strategic Efforts Prevent 1.5 Million Tonnes Of CO2 Emissions In 2023

Tabreed, a global leader in district cooling, has reported significant energy savings and environmental benefits in its 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. The company reduced overall energy consumption by 2.52 billion kWh, equivalent to powering over 143,000 homes. This reduction prevented 1.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions, comparable to removing 330,000 vehicles from the road.

In partnership with ADNOC, Tabreed designed and commissioned G2COOL, the region’s first district cooling plant powered by geothermal energy. Located in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City, this plant aims to decarbonise building cooling systems while supporting the UAE National Energy Strategy 2050.

Additionally, Tabreed purchased 116,000 MWh of solar-sourced Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) from the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). These CECs are sufficient to cool locations such as Masdar City, Raha Beach, and key attractions on Yas Island.

Tabreed participated in a carbon credits trading pilot by Dubai Financial Market (DFM), involving 24 prominent UAE companies. The carbon credits were supplied by DEWA, First Abu Dhabi Bank, and MyCarbon from internationally certified projects. This initiative underscores Tabreed’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Community Engagement

Tabreed was active in various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives throughout 2023. The company supported startups and young entrepreneurs focused on climate solutions by partnering with HUB71+ climateTECH. During Ramadan, Tabreed collaborated with Emirates Red Crescent to provide thousands of meals to underprivileged community members.

Employee Well-being

To improve work-life balance for its staff, Tabreed increased remote workday allowances by 50 percent and introduced a ‘personal hours’ policy. These measures aim to enhance employee satisfaction and productivity.

Khalid Al Marzooqi, Tabreed’s CEO, expressed pride in the company’s achievements. "This incredible company spent 2023 reaffirming its reputation as an undeniable force for good. Good for our customers, our investors, our staff, our communities and our environment," he said.
