Sustainable Maritime Industry Conference In Jeddah Focuses On Strategic Agreements For Sustainability
The second annual Sustainable Maritime Industry Conference, held at the Ritz-Carlton Jeddah, began with the signing of 10 strategic agreements. These agreements between government bodies and private entities aim to advance the maritime transport sector and boost its sustainability. The Transport General Authority (TGA) partnered with various ministries and organisations to enhance maritime operations and align with Saudi Vision 2030.
One notable agreement was between the TGA and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. This partnership focuses on regulating maritime labour contracts to protect workers' rights and make maritime professions more appealing. Another significant agreement was made with the Ministry of Health to oversee medical examinations for seafarers, ensuring their well-being.

The TGA also collaborated with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime sector. This agreement supports research projects aimed at fostering innovation in maritime technology. Additionally, a partnership with the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) seeks to ensure safe transport of petrochemicals while promoting sustainability.
Efforts to manage marine waste sustainably were highlighted through an agreement with the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN). These partnerships reflect a commitment to building strategic alliances that support Saudi Arabia's goal of becoming a global logistics hub, connecting three continents.
The conference also saw educational collaborations, including agreements by the National Maritime Academy. They partnered with King Abdulaziz University's Faculty of Maritime Studies and Asim Association for Orphan Training and Empowerment. Another agreement involved Mediterranean Shipping Company Saudi Arabia working with the Applied College at the University of Jeddah.
Workshops and panel discussions were integral parts of the conference, focusing on future maritime sector developments. Distinguished figures and international experts participated in these sessions, exploring pathways for industry growth.

Participants included Saudi Minister Saleh Al-Jasser, Bahraini Minister Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Liberian Minister Sirleaf Ralph Tyler, Cypriot Minister Marina Hadjimanolis, and Dominica Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton.
The ministers emphasised digital transformation's role in enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in maritime operations. They also highlighted the importance of international cooperation to address shared challenges like reducing carbon emissions, improving safety standards, and developing specialised human capital.
Exploring Energy Efficiency
The conference sessions covered various topics related to energy efficiency in shipping. The first session focused on global trends in maritime sustainability, innovation's importance, modern technologies, and international cooperation for a competitive future industry.
The second session addressed pathways to reducing emissions by improving port operational efficiency and transitioning to sustainable energy sources. Advanced technologies were discussed as tools for limiting carbon emissions effectively.
Financial Solutions for Maritime Sector
The third session explored innovative insurance and financing tools supporting the maritime sector's development. Meanwhile, the fourth session examined financial and technological innovations' roles in boosting energy efficiency within maritime transport.
Three workshops complemented these discussions: "Implementing Decarbonization Strategies in Shipping Operations," "Developing a Roadmap for Sustainability of Small and Medium-Sized Maritime Enterprises," and "Underwater Noise Reduction: a Co-Benefit for Climate and Biodiversity Shipping Goals." These workshops provided practical insights into achieving sustainability goals within the industry.
