Saudi Fashion Commission Introduces Sustainable Ihram Initiative For Eco-Friendly Pilgrimage Attire

The Saudi Fashion Commission has introduced the Sustainable Ihram Initiative at the Islamic Arts Biennale. This project aims to recycle Ihram garments by collecting and reusing textile waste from pilgrims, transforming it into new sustainable clothing. The initiative is a collaboration with the Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) and Tadweem, both leaders in waste management and sustainable fashion.

In addition to SIRC and Tadweem, the commission has teamed up with SANKO Textile, a group known for its focus on sustainable textiles. They are also supported by RE&UP, a company specialising in textile-to-textile recycling technology. These partnerships enhance the initiative's environmental impact by promoting eco-friendly practices within the fashion industry.

Sustainable Ihram Initiative by Saudi Fashion Commission

The process of recycling textiles through this initiative demonstrates how viable textile recycling can be in fashion. It contributes to creating a more sustainable ecosystem for textiles. By doing so, it aligns with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals for environmental protection, marking progress towards a greener fashion industry in Saudi Arabia.

The Sustainable Ihram Initiative not only focuses on recycling but also aims to increase consumer awareness about textile recycling. It supports developing a circular textile economy in Saudi Arabia, encouraging sustainable practices among consumers and businesses alike.

Saudi Fashion Commission chief executive Burak Cakmak stated, "The Sustainable Ihram Initiative demonstrates our commitment to innovation in sustainable practices, honoring the cultural and spiritual significance of the Ihram while safeguarding our planet for future generations." His words highlight the commission's dedication to fostering a vibrant and sustainable fashion industry that meets global sustainability standards.

This initiative is an important step towards promoting conscious consumption and recycling within the Kingdom's fashion sector. It reflects a commitment to sustainability while respecting cultural traditions associated with Ihram garments used during pilgrimages.
