Sustainability Is A Fundamental Aspect Of UAE's National Identity, Says Dr. Amna Al Dahak
The UAE's dedication to sustainability is deeply rooted in its national identity, as highlighted by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, the Minister of Climate Change and the Environment. This commitment stems from the vision of the UAE's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and continues to guide current leadership efforts in environmental stewardship and climate change mitigation.
During a session at the 2nd Global Government Leaders Programme (GGLP), Dr. Al Dahak addressed participants about the UAE’s best practices in various strategic sectors. She stated, "Sustainability is part of the UAE DNA, and a legacy that continues to guide our path with clear vision and objectives. We consider sustainability a core value that not only shapes domestic policies but also positions the UAE as a global leader."

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment actively implements this vision through partnerships with government entities, NGOs, private sector actors, and communities. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive strategy for addressing climate change and conserving resources. The UAE aims to triple renewable energy's share in its energy mix through its Energy Strategy 2050.
Dr. Al Dahak emphasised that this strategy reflects a long-term commitment to diversifying energy sources and reducing fossil fuel reliance. It also strengthens the circular economy model by minimising waste, maximising resource efficiency, and promoting innovative waste treatment solutions. The Ministry supports these efforts through environmental regulations and green practices.
Dr. Amna Al Dahak highlighted initiatives like Plant the UAE, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This programme supports agricultural development and sustainable food security by encouraging home-grown crops and shifting public perception towards local produce. It contributes to the Year of Sustainability 2024 by lowering carbon footprints.
The programme exemplifies public-private partnerships aimed at expanding green spaces and promoting local agriculture. The Ministry continues to advocate for climate-smart agriculture, empowering communities to contribute to a more sustainable UAE.
Global Cooperation for Development Goals
Concluding her session, Dr. Al Dahak reiterated the UAE's commitment to international cooperation for achieving global sustainable development goals. She expressed hope that GGLP would offer valuable insights into the UAE's experience for participants from 31 countries including Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Iraq, Bermuda, Ethiopia, Georgia, Maldives, Andorra, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt among others.
The Global Government Leaders Programme is organised by the Government Experience Exchange Office at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs alongside the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Leadership Development (MBRCLD). It empowers first- and second-tier government leaders from participating countries by sharing successful experiences in government performance.
This programme equips participants with practical tools and models to enhance their institutions' readiness and effectiveness for future challenges.
