Sultan Bin Ahmed Reviews Key Research Initiatives At University Of Sharjah For Community Impact
H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), recently evaluated the progress of research projects at UoS. These initiatives align with the university's 2030 strategic plan. During his visit to the College of Health Sciences, H.H. emphasised transforming these projects into practical applications that benefit society and various sectors.
H.H. encouraged institutions to adopt these projects, turning them into commercial ventures that enhance scientific, educational, health, technical, and environmental efforts. A detailed presentation highlighted a key project focusing on producing green hydrogen from seawater. This initiative is central to the university's 2030 strategy and aims to establish a pilot station for green hydrogen production.
The green hydrogen project involves creating a pilot station with an initial capacity of 200 kilograms per day, eventually expanding to 2,000 kilograms daily. This expansion will meet Sharjah's needs and support sustainability goals in the UAE. The project underscores UoS's role as a leading educational and research institution contributing to UAE Vision 2030.
Sheikh Sultan also reviewed "EduMentor," a digital application combining artificial intelligence with entertainment methods. This educational programme presents information engagingly to encourage student participation and consolidate learning through virtual applications.
A visual presentation showcased a project aimed at preventing and diagnosing neurological and chronic diseases in the UAE using artificial intelligence. The initiative seeks to improve life quality by enabling early diagnosis of prevalent neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Artificial intelligence techniques are employed to identify biomarkers related to diseases common in Sharjah and the UAE, including clinical depression, dementia, multiple sclerosis, asthma, and cancer. These biomarkers help develop non-invasive diagnostic kits using saliva for accurate disease diagnosis.
Centre of Excellence in Healthy Aging
The benefits of this project include enhancing life quality for Sharjah citizens through effective non-invasive diagnostic kits. It also fosters a pioneering ecosystem for Emirati students and faculty at UoS to advance research work. Additionally, it aims to establish a leading startup company in AI and precision diagnostic medicine in Sharjah.
H.H. reviewed achievements from the UoS Centre of Excellence in Healthy Aging, which focuses on community service, education, scientific research, medical initiatives, and collaborations with government and private entities. The report outlined future plans for international memberships and cooperation with specialised global organisations.
The ongoing efforts at UoS reflect its commitment to innovation in education and research while addressing societal needs through practical applications. These projects not only aim for academic excellence but also strive for tangible benefits across various sectors within the UAE.
