H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, was present at the opening of the 25th Sir Bu Nair Festival. This significant environmental event commenced on Thursday at Al Heera Beach in Sharjah. The festival, marking its silver jubilee, runs from 16th to 25th October. Activities will also occur on Sir Bu Nair Island on 24th and 25th October.
The festival's opening ceremony featured a documentary about Sir Bu Nair Island, showcasing its history and unique environment. It highlighted the achievements of the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority in managing the island over the years. The film also detailed the island's biodiversity and its transformation into a nature reserve for turtles, birds, and coral reefs.
Attendees enjoyed a marine-themed artistic performance that illustrated the Emirati people's deep connection to the sea. This performance highlighted values such as hard work and cooperation, which have shaped Emirati generations. It also emphasised the crucial roles sailors and divers played in developing their community historically.
A creative drone light show was part of the ceremony, projecting artistic displays above Al Heera Beach. The show celebrated Sir Bu Nair Island's marine beauty and unique biodiversity while marking the festival's silver jubilee. It also reflected Sharjah’s commitment to environmental preservation and protecting its natural heritage.
H.H. Sheikh Sultan honoured entities that contributed to the festival’s success, including strategic partners and sponsors. He attended performances by traditional folk groups and toured key environmental activities on Sir Bu Nair Island. These activities included coral reef cultivation, turtle conservation, and beach clean-up initiatives.
During his visit, H.H. Sheikh Sultan met children participating in educational workshops focused on marine awareness. These programmes aim to develop responsibility towards conserving natural resources through experiential learning combined with awareness campaigns promoting positive environmental behaviour.
