Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi Reviews Plans For Al Qasimi Optical Observatory In Sharjah

H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, recently reviewed the Al Qasimi Optical Radio Observatory project. This observatory is planned for Jebel Al-Kitab and was discussed during his visit to the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology. The project aims to become a scientific hub and a national symbol of excellence.

The observatory will be the UAE's first officially registered astronomical facility for space activities. It will offer services in tracking, monitoring, and space situational awareness. Housing the largest optical telescope in the Arabian Gulf, it will be the most advanced in the Arab world. Three main observational stations will focus on stellar and exoplanet research, star formation studies, and galaxy analysis through spectral examination.

The observatory's vision includes developing national talent and fostering international collaborations. It aims to lay a foundation for scientific advancement aligned with the UAE’s space exploration goals. Public engagement programmes, scientific workshops, and hands-on training for researchers are also planned. Additionally, it will address a gap in southern sky observation.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed also examined the Sharjah CubeSat Laboratory's achievements. The lab focuses on building national expertise in CubeSat design and operation. It provides technical training and invests in talent development through capacity-building programmes. Notable projects include Sharjah-Sat 1 and 2, along with scientific publications and training initiatives.

The visit concluded with a presentation on the Sharjah Planetarium’s latest achievements. New live astronomical shows using advanced simulation software have been developed. Topics include auroras, cosmic clouds, the International Space Station, violent cosmic phenomena, the Moon, and the Islamic lunar calendar.

The planetarium actively participates in local and international events to enhance community engagement in astronomy. Ongoing development projects aim to raise public awareness about astronomy through diverse topics.

Meteorite Laboratory Initiatives

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed explored the Meteorite Laboratory during his visit as well. This facility includes the UAE Meteor Monitoring Network and meteorite analysis units. It houses 8,111 meteorite specimens and plays a key role in research and student training.

Upcoming projects at the Meteorite Laboratory involve developing a meteorite law for the UAE and expanding meteor monitoring networks. Plans also include processing affected meteorites, enhancing display techniques, upgrading analysis equipment, and strengthening collaborations with various entities.

The observatory aligns with the University of Sharjah’s EDGE strategy focusing on localisation, digital transformation, international collaboration, and entrepreneurship. Future plans extend until 2031 to enhance research efforts further.
