Strengthening India-UAE Relations: Key Outcomes From Sheikh Khaled’s Visit To India

The first official visit of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, to India marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between India and the UAE, and at a time of much global volatility. This visit not only reinforced the immensely warm diplomatic ties between the two nations, but also highlighted their deepening strategic partnership. The visit underscored the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation across various sectors such as energy, trade, technology, and food security, and opened up new opportunities for future collaboration.

In recent years, under the leadership of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayan and Prime Minister Modi both nations have made huge strides towards developing greener economies, yet at the same time ensuring economic resilience and carefully balancing immediate national energy security considerations.

Sheikh Khaled s Visit Enhances India-UAE Ties

Sheikh Khaled's visit underscored these considerations through several significant outcomes, primarily in energy, nuclear cooperation, trade, and food security. The agreements signed during his meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai reflect both nations' desire to foster long-term strategic partnerships. Here are the most noteworthy developments:

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation will significantly bolster collaboration in nuclear energy. This cooperation is a win-win for both nations - India stands to benefit from the UAE's advanced expertise in nuclear technology to meet its sustainable energy demands, while the UAE may explore investment opportunities in India's expanding nuclear sector.

Energy security is of paramount importance for India, and the agreement between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited for the long-term supply of Liquified Natural Gas is the third such agreement in just over a year, emphasising the UAE's role as a reliable partner in India's energy diversification strategy. This move consolidates the energy relationship between the two nations and helps India secure a stable and diversified energy supply to meet its growing needs.

Another crucial agreement was the MoU between ADNOC and India Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited regarding crude oil storage which enhances India's energy security by providing a buffer during times of global market volatility and further cements the UAE's role in strengthening India's energy resilience.

In a historic move, an Indian company, Urja Bharat, secured its first-ever production concession in the UAE. This agreement not only boosts Indian businesses' presence in the UAE but also allows for the import of crude oil to India, contributing to India's energy needs. It also marks a milestone in increasing Indian participation in the UAE's oil sector, opening the door to future collaboration in the energy domain.

Food Security Initiatives

The MoU between the Government of Gujarat and Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company PJSC (ADQ) for the development of food parks in Gujarat is aimed at enhancing food security and boosting India's agri-business sector. The UAE's involvement in this project underscores its commitment to building a sustainable future, with food security being a critical area of cooperation between the two nations.

The India-UAE Virtual Trade Corridor

The Mumbai leg of Sheikh Khaled's visit yielded another significant milestone: the launch of the innovative "India-UAE Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC)". Expected to streamline trade processes, boost efficiency and lower costs for transactions between the two nations, the VTC complements the ongoing development of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and reflects both countries' focus on leveraging technology to overcome logistical hurdles and enhance trade relations. As the details of the VTC unfold, it is clear that this initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to enhancing economic ties.

Securing Critical Minerals

The MoU between the UAE's International Resources Holding RSC and a consortium of Indian state-owned companies, including Oil India, ONGC Videsh, and Khanij Bidesh India will ensure a reliable supply of critical minerals essential for India's ambitious energy transition goals and push toward self-reliance in key sectors such as electric vehicles. Collaborating with the UAE in this area will strengthen India's ability to meet its growing demand for these resources.

Power of Pragmatic Diplomatic Engagement

As Chairman of India Global Forum (IGF), I view Sheikh Khaled's visit as a significant milestone in the evolving relationship between two key global players, aligning perfectly with IGF's mission of fostering international partnerships for economic growth. At IGF, we have consistently championed deeper integration between India and the UAE across multiple sectors, recognising the vast potential for mutual, and indeed, wider benefit.

The agreements signed during this visit exemplify how the two countries can complement each other's strengths and showcase the power of pragmatic diplomatic engagement in advancing economic interests and spurring innovation. As IGF continues to promote India's global engagement, we are committed to ensuring that the momentum generated by this visit leads to meaningful and sustained progress in India-UAE relations. By continuing the ongoing dialogue and collaboration at our upcoming IGF Middle East and Africa from 24 to 27 November in Dubai & Abu Dhabi, IGF will help ensure that the full potential of this strategic partnership is realised in the years to come.
