SRTA Unveils Innovative Projects To Enhance Sustainable Transportation In Sharjah
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) took part in the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference (GRTIEC). They showcased innovative projects aimed at boosting sustainability in transportation and preparing Sharjah's infrastructure for future demands. This aligns with the emirate's vision to enhance public transport using cutting-edge technology.
Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, highlighted that these projects are a result of ongoing efforts by various departments. The aim is to improve service quality while ensuring safer transport through modern technologies and artificial intelligence. "The projects unveiled during the exhibition are the result of continuous efforts by relevant departments within the Authority to achieve qualitative additions and enhance the efficiency of services provided, while ensuring safer transportation methods using modern technologies and artificial intelligence tools," he stated.

Among the showcased projects were smart surveillance cameras installed in taxis. Each taxi is equipped with five AI-powered cameras: three inside covering both cockpit and rear seats, and two outside capturing front and rear views. Another project involved electronic screens at bus stops displaying real-time bus arrival times, enhancing user satisfaction.
The SRTA also presented its Traffic Control Room project. This system connects all traffic signals to a central location, allowing for real-time monitoring of traffic flow. It identifies vehicle numbers at intersections, adjusts signal timings, and links them for smoother traffic movement through what is known as the "Green Passage" system.
A pioneering project introduced by SRTA is the Priority Traffic Device for emergency vehicles like ambulances, civil defense, and police. This system allows these vehicles to change traffic signals to green up to 750 meters before reaching an intersection. It ensures quick passage, enhances road safety, reduces response times, and prevents breakdowns during congestion.
Al Othmani noted that SRTA's pavilion also featured the Intercity Bus Fleet Management and Ticketing System project. This integrated system aims to boost operational efficiency using modern bus tracking technologies and electronic tickets. It enables real-time monitoring of bus routes, passenger numbers, driver compliance, sudden stops or speeding incidents, thus improving road safety.
Future Plans for Enhanced Integration
Al Othmani emphasised that SRTA's initiatives focus on improving customer experience by providing services that meet residents' and visitors' needs. Future plans include more innovative solutions to enhance integration between different transport modes while supporting environmental sustainability efforts.
The Authority's participation in GRTIEC underscores its commitment to adopting advanced solutions for a sustainable transport future in Sharjah. These initiatives reflect a strategic approach towards integrating technology into public transportation systems.
