UAE and Malta Special Olympics Teams Launch Joint Training Camp in Al Ain
In a significant step towards fostering international collaboration and promoting inclusivity in sports, Special Olympics UAE and Special Olympics Malta have inaugurated a joint training camp in Al Ain. This event marks a milestone as it brings together 30 athletes, with 15 participants from each country, to train in various sports including bocce, swimming, and athletics until the 18th of February. This initiative not only highlights the strong ties between the two organizations but also sets a new precedent with the Maltese delegation being the first European Special Olympics group to engage in such a camp in the UAE.
The city of Al Ain plays host to this remarkable event, with sponsorship from the Department of Culture and Tourism and the Integrated Transport Centre. Beyond the rigorous training sessions, the athletes will have the opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi's cultural landmarks, enriching their experience with social interactions and historical insights into the capital's heritage.

Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, expressed his enthusiasm for the joint camp. He emphasized the solid and collaborative relationship between the two countries, recalling their participation in the Special Olympics Invitational Games in 2022 and a recent visit from Dr. Lydia Abella, First Lady of Malta and President of Special Olympics Malta. The discussions during her visit focused on advancing sports programs for athletes in both nations through strategic training enhancements.
"This camp demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to empowering People of Determination with mental and developmental disabilities from all over the world," Al Hashemi stated. He highlighted the camp's role in providing more opportunities for athletes to explore sports and culture while fostering connections with peers. The anticipation for The Special Olympics Malta Invitational Games next September was also mentioned as part of their ongoing preparations.
Al Hashemi extended his gratitude towards the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi and the Integrated Transport Centre for their significant contributions to making the camp a memorable experience for all participants. This joint training camp not only underscores the growing ties between Special Olympics UAE and Special Olympics Malta but also celebrates the achievements of Emirati athletes who secured 16 medals at the Special Olympics Malta Invitational Games 2022, marking a proud moment as the sole representation from the MENA region.
The collaboration between Special Olympics UAE and Special Olympics Malta through this training camp serves as a testament to their dedication towards enhancing sports programs and supporting athletes with disabilities. It reflects a shared vision for a more inclusive world where every individual has the opportunity to excel and connect through sports and cultural exchanges.
