Special Olympics UAE Initiates First Gulf Badminton Competition In Abu Dhabi

In a landmark event for the region, Abu Dhabi recently became the host city for the first Special Olympics MENA's Sub-Regional Gulf Badminton Competition. This significant sporting event was brought to life through a collaboration between Special Olympics UAE, Special Olympics MENA, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, UAE Badminton Federation, Badminton World Federation, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology. The competition's primary goal is to foster unity, camaraderie, and sportsmanship among athletes and partners across the Gulf.

The opening ceremony saw delegations from Special Olympics programs in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE gather at the W Hotel on Yas Island. This assembly also included representatives from Special Olympics organizations and diplomatic missions from the participating countries, marking a significant moment of regional cooperation and support for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

UAE's First Gulf Badminton Event

Ayman Abdel Wahab, Special Olympics Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa, highlighted the importance of this gathering. "Bringing together more than 25 badminton athletes from across the Gulf to compete in Abu Dhabi is a significant addition to the Special Olympics movement," he stated. Abdel Wahab emphasized how sports competitions positively impact athletes' lives by promoting inclusion, empowerment, and equality.

The event also reflects the ongoing commitment of local authorities to support People of Determination. Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, expressed pride in hosting this inaugural competition. He noted its alignment with the Council's objectives to support sporting events for People of Determination and underscored Abu Dhabi's role as a pivotal location on the international sports map.

Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, welcomed all participating delegations to what he referred to as their "second home." He expressed pride in hosting such an inspiring group of athletes for the first time in the UAE. "We prioritize People of Determination and continuously work towards integrating them and activating their role in sports and all aspects of life," Al Hashemi remarked.

On the sidelines of the competition, a training program was held for 21 technical and administrative staff representatives from various countries including Canada, Malaysia, Egypt, Spain, Vietnam, China, the United States, and Peru. This program aimed to enhance participants' technical skills and qualifications for managing and arbitrating badminton events for People of Determination.

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi from Khalifa University expressed pride in hosting this pioneering competition. He emphasized its positive societal impact and Khalifa University's commitment to supporting People of Determination alongside advancing the strategic goals of Special Olympics UAE. "These competitions not only support integration but also showcase the athletes as exemplary sports role models," Dr. Al Hammadi concluded.

The state-of-the-art facilities at Khalifa University provided an ideal setting for this major international sporting competition. As Abu Dhabi continues to host such groundbreaking events, it reinforces its readiness to make every major sporting event a success while highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for all.
