Special Olympics UAE Athletes Excel In Inaugural Topgolf Tournament For People Of Determination
The UAE hosted its inaugural Special Olympics Topgolf Invitational Tournament for People of Determination on July 26. This one-day virtual event took place at Topgolf venues in participating countries, including the US and UK. Seventy-two athletes from the UAE represented the nation, marking a significant step for inclusive sports, particularly for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Participants were selected through an eight-week national training programme that started in May. This initiative was made possible by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Special Olympics UAE and Topgolf Dubai. Athletes across the country engaged in structured training and national qualifiers, with 72 individuals ultimately chosen to represent the UAE internationally.

The tournament aimed to broaden participation by using innovative technology and purposefully designed golf environments. This approach created more accessible sporting experiences for individuals with disabilities. The competition utilised Topgolf’s advanced technology to facilitate parallel play across multiple levels, allowing over 36 athletes to compete simultaneously per floor.
Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, expressed pride in the athletes' achievements: "This tournament represents a new chapter in international empowerment for our athletes, made possible by the continued support of our wise leadership. The UAE remains committed to promoting the full inclusion of People of Determination, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, through meaningful opportunities in sport and beyond."
Athletes were chosen based on time-based performance metrics, age eligibility, and consistent attendance. Each participant needed to complete at least 80% of the training sessions. For many athletes, this was their first experience in a Topgolf competition, making their strong representation noteworthy.
Mike Walton, General Manager of Topgolf Dubai, commented: "We are proud to have hosted this first-of-its-kind virtual event in partnership with Special Olympics International. The dedication and progress shown by the athletes over the past eight weeks was truly inspiring. We believe this initiative reinforces the inclusive potential of golf and our shared commitment to making the sport accessible to all."
Global Coordination for Fair Play
The tournament was organised with input from a global working group that included Special Olympics International, Special Olympics Texas, and Topgolf. Together they developed a comprehensive virtual competition framework and technical standards to ensure fair play.
This event not only showcased athletic talent but also strengthened confidence among participants. It opened doors for further growth opportunities in sports excellence for People of Determination within the UAE.
