South Sudan Celebrates Third Arabic Poetry Forum Under The Patronage Of Sharjah's Ruler
The Republic of South Sudan recently hosted the third Arabic Poetry Forum under the theme "Indeed, there is wisdom in poetry." This event was held under the patronage of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Organised by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Sharjah Department of Culture, it aimed to promote Arabic language and poetry across Africa.
The forum is part of a broader initiative to expand classical Arabic poetry's reach and strengthen its presence among creators. Previous forums have been held in Chad, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, and Ivory Coast. The initiative will continue to travel to other African countries, reinforcing its cultural vision and message.

Dr. Mohammed Kai Lukwaj, President of the Union of Muslim Scholars of South Sudan, attended the opening ceremony alongside several Arab diplomats. Poets, intellectuals, and academics passionate about the Arabic language were also present. Their participation highlighted the forum's significance in promoting cultural exchange.
Dr. Mohammed Maj Riek, head of the organising committee, expressed his delight at hosting the forum for the third time in South Sudan. He stated, "We are pleased that the Arabic Poetry Forum continues its presence for the third time in our country, marking a significant cultural milestone in South Sudan's history."
The event featured nine poets: Qasim Barnaba Kasanga, Mohammed Suleiman, Mabior Sherilo, Fariol Jis, Intisar Ramadan, Salem Juma Bour, Scheherazade Kamel, Eliza Zakaria, and Deng Juma. Their poems showcased a masterful use of language with themes enriched by metaphors and vivid imagery.
The readings continued with other poets presenting diverse works. The forum concluded with recognition for participating poets who received certificates of appreciation for their creative contributions. This gesture encouraged them to continue writing poetry.
Cultural Significance
Mohammed Lukwaj extended gratitude to Sharjah and its Ruler for efforts made to elevate Arabic in Africa. He remarked on shared cultural heritage with Arab nations: "I would like to extend my gratitude to Sharjah and its enlightened Ruler...for efforts made to elevate and preserve the Arabic language in African nations."
This forum not only celebrated poetic talent but also strengthened ties between Arab countries and South Sudan through a shared appreciation for language and culture.
