South Korea Records High Turnout In Crucial Parliamentary Elections

The Republic of Korea witnessed a significant moment in its democratic process as citizens participated in the parliamentary elections to choose members for the new National Assembly. The elections, held on Wednesday, saw polling stations open from 6:00 to 18:00 local time, with a total of 14,259 locations facilitating the voting process across the nation. This electoral event was keenly observed, given the high public interest and participation rates recorded.

According to reports from Yonhap news agency, the National Election Commission (NEC) confirmed that over 30 million individuals were eligible to vote in the main election, following an impressive early voting turnout. The early voting, which took place on Friday and Saturday of the previous week, marked a historic moment with a 31.28 percent turnout. This was the first instance since the introduction of the early voting system in 2014 where turnout for general elections surpassed the 30 percent mark.

High Turnout in S. Korea Elections

As the polls neared closure, data revealed a turnout of 64.1 percent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the 2020 elections. By 17:00 on election day, approximately 28.38 million out of an eligible 44.28 million voters had participated. This figure includes votes from last week's early voting session, as well as ballots cast by overseas South Korean nationals and those aboard ships.

The elections were crucial in determining the composition of the National Assembly, with 300 seats up for grabs. Of these, 254 seats were to be directly elected, while the remaining 46 were allocated through a proportional representation system. This dual-ballot system required voters to select both a candidate and a political party, adding an additional layer of decision-making to the electoral process.

This year's parliamentary elections in South Korea have not only demonstrated a robust engagement from the electorate but also highlighted the effectiveness of the early voting system introduced seven years ago. The increased turnout suggests a growing interest in the political landscape and an active participation in shaping the country's legislative future.
