South Korea Proposes Framework For Manufacturing Cooperation During US Trade Negotiations

South Korea is aiming to create a "mutually beneficial" manufacturing partnership with the United States. This initiative was discussed during bilateral talks focusing on tariffs and trade matters, as reported by Seoul's industry ministry. Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo presented this proposal to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, according to South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Yeo outlined Seoul's vision for collaboration in manufacturing and a complementary supply chain partnership. This comes as the U.S. seeks to revitalise its manufacturing sector. The discussions also included the potential elimination or reduction of U.S. tariffs on key items like automobiles and steel, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The two countries are also considering extending the suspension of 25 percent reciprocal tariffs imposed on South Korea during President Donald Trump's administration. This extension would facilitate more comprehensive trade negotiations between the nations. South Korea is pursuing full exemption or reduction of these tariffs and duties on imported cars, steel, and other products.

South Korea aims to achieve this through a package deal addressing tariffs, non-tariff measures, industrial cooperation, and other trade issues. "Since the launch of the new administration (in South Korea), both Seoul and Washington have been fully committed to negotiations aimed at finding mutually beneficial, win-win solutions for trade issues," Yeo stated.

Despite ongoing uncertainties, Yeo emphasised that negotiations with the U.S. will persist until a favourable outcome is reached. The focus remains on protecting national interests throughout these discussions. The commitment from both sides underscores their dedication to resolving trade issues amicably.

The proposed framework aims to strengthen economic ties between South Korea and the United States by fostering cooperation in manufacturing sectors. By addressing tariff concerns and enhancing industrial collaboration, both countries hope to achieve a balanced trade relationship that benefits their respective economies.
