Somaliland President Abdullahi Praises UAE Support And Aims For Enhanced Bilateral Partnerships
Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, President of Somaliland, expressed gratitude to the UAE for its ongoing support. He emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral ties in economic and developmental areas. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during the 2025 World Government Summit, he highlighted Emirati investments' crucial role, especially through DP World, in enhancing Somaliland's economic infrastructure.
DP World's investment in Berbera Port has been transformative. It not only developed the port but also established a free zone and trade corridor. This has strengthened economic connections between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which has a population of about 134 million. Berbera has become a key regional trade hub due to improved logistics and cross-border transport.

The President noted that UAE-funded hospitals in Berbera and Buroa are addressing significant healthcare financing challenges. These hospitals are expected to greatly improve healthcare services for local communities. The health sector's development is crucial for Somaliland's progress, given its current financial constraints.
President Abdullahi identified several promising sectors for Emirati investment in Somaliland. The livestock sector is a major economic pillar, with between 40 and 50 million livestock. Annually, around 4 million sheep are exported to Saudi Arabia during Hajj. This sector could position Somaliland as a food supplier for Gulf States, especially in meat exports.
Agriculture also presents significant opportunities due to fertile land available for cultivation. Proper investment could enhance food security for Gulf States. The blue economy offers another avenue for growth; Somaliland's 850-kilometre coastline is rich in marine resources but remains underutilised.
"The fishing industry simply requires modern investments, and we could become a major supplier of fish to the UAE, the Gulf States, and even European markets," he said.
Tourism Potential
Somaliland boasts unique tourist attractions, including over 150 kilometres of untouched beaches just two hours from Dubai. This makes it an attractive destination for hospitality investors looking to tap into tourism potential. Developing these sites could boost tourism significantly.
Somaliland's strategic location and resources offer numerous investment opportunities across various sectors. With continued support from partners like the UAE, these sectors can drive economic growth and development in the region.
