Smart Technologies And 5G Shaping The Future Of China's Agricultural Sector

China is making significant strides in modernizing its agricultural sector through the integration of smart technologies and the extensive deployment of the 5G network. This initiative, as reported by China Central Television, aligns with the central authorities' emphasis on prioritizing agriculture and rural development. This focus is part of the broader objectives outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), aiming to elevate agricultural modernization to new heights.

The government has introduced a variety of measures to advance rural reform comprehensively, achieving notable progress in several key areas. Among these achievements is the development of over one billion mu (approximately 66.67 million hectares) of high-standard farmland. This expansion has significantly enhanced grain production capacity, increasing it by 10 percent to 20 percent per mu. Additionally, the total length of rural roads in China has extended to 4.6 million km, with all eligible towns and villages now featuring hardened roads. Remarkably, more than 80 percent of administrative villages have gained access to 5G networks, marking a substantial improvement in rural connectivity.

Scientific and technological innovation plays a pivotal role in driving agricultural modernization in China. The contribution rate of agricultural science and technology progress has surpassed 63 percent. Furthermore, China boasts a self-sufficiency rate of crop sources exceeding 95 percent. The country has also seen widespread adoption of agricultural machinery equipped with China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System terminals, with nearly 2.2 million sets installed, alongside nearly 200,000 plant protection drones.

The integration of modern science and technology into agriculture has not only made traditional farming methods more efficient but also significantly enhanced agricultural production techniques. This technological advancement has led to an increase in the mechanization rate of crop plowing, planting, and harvesting from 67.2 percent in 2017 to 73 percent in 2022. As a result, China has achieved a grain harvest exceeding 650 million tonnes for the ninth consecutive year in 2023.

In addition to technological advancements, China is actively working on constructing a modern agricultural industrial system. To date, the country has established a total of 289,000 village-level comprehensive delivery and logistics service stations and 75,000 refrigeration and fresh-keeping facilities in production areas. These developments ensure that fresh agricultural produce can be transported more efficiently to major markets.

This concerted effort by China to modernize its agricultural sector through smart technologies and infrastructure development underscores the country's commitment to enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. By prioritizing agriculture and rural development within its national agenda, China is setting a precedent for how technological innovation can be harnessed to advance agricultural modernization on a global scale.
