Sixth GNRC Forum Concludes With Global Leaders Launching Abu Dhabi Call For Child Protection

The Sixth Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC) Forum concluded in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities. The event culminated with the release of the "Abu Dhabi Call," a declaration that united international religious leaders, thinkers, and specialists over three days of discussions. These dialogues aimed to unify perspectives and enhance the role of religious leaders in child protection globally.

The "Abu Dhabi Call" was launched at Wahat Al Karama, highlighting a shared commitment to ensuring every child's safety and dignity. It urges immediate action across religions, governments, and civil society, proposing an actionable plan focusing on interfaith dialogue, mental health support, comprehensive policies, and eliminating harmful practices. Signatories pledged to amplify children's voices and work towards a sustainable future.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah emphasised the importance of child protection in his speech at the closing ceremony. He stated, "Protecting children is a permanent priority at all times because it is one of those topics that touches on humans (the individual and the family) in the closest and dearest people to them, which are children. On the other hand, it touches on and concerns society and the state as a whole because it is concerned with the future in all its meanings."

He further highlighted that Islamic teachings have always prioritised children's well-being by nurturing their bodies and minds. The UAE’s efforts in caring for orphans and aiding children in conflict zones align with these values. The country is notably the first Arab nation to join the Global Partnership to "End Violence against Children."

The forum addressed critical issues such as hunger, poverty, abuse, exploitation, human trafficking, mental health during global crises, child dignity in the digital age, extremism, hate crimes, and xenophobia. Organised by Arigatou International and the Alliance of Religions for Safer Communities, it brought together UN officials, international agencies, senior religious leaders, and children's rights experts.

Participants focused on collaborative strategies to combat these challenges. They underscored the roles of religious leaders, civil society, law enforcement, and policymakers in addressing these pressing issues effectively.

Cultural Engagement

In addition to participating in discussions at the forum, international delegates and children visited cultural sites across the UAE. These visits showcased Emirati values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence while reflecting respect for others within society.

The event underscored UAE's dedication to building a safer future for children worldwide. High-profile attendees included Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan; Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah; Rev. Keishi Miyamoto; Kul Gautam; Dana Hamid; Dr. Mustafa Ali; Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi; alongside children from various countries.

The declaration was crafted with input from over 100 leaders from faith-based organisations and NGOs. It calls for unified efforts to protect children's rights globally while fostering compassion among communities.
