Six Historic Arab Publishing Houses Recognised At Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2025
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) 2025 will pay tribute to six historic Arab publishing houses, acknowledging their collective 520 years of service in the Arab publishing industry. This recognition is part of the 'Pioneers of Arabic Publishing' initiative, which aims to bolster Arab culture, expand the publishing sector, promote Arabic books, and encourage reading.
During the 34th edition of the fair, held from 26th April to 5th May 2025, the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) highlighted these publishers' contributions to enriching Arab culture and preserving Arabic content. The honoured publishers include Dar Sader (Lebanon), Dar Al Maaref (Egypt), Dar Al Fikr (Syria), Dubai Library (UAE), That Al Salasil (Kuwait), and Dar Al Shorok (Jordan).

The recognition acknowledges these pioneering publishers' efforts in developing and promoting the Arabic book industry. Their inspiring journeys and challenges over the years are celebrated at the fair. This event also underscores Abu Dhabi's role as a key player in regional publishing growth and its commitment to global book industry initiatives.
Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Executive Director of the ALC and Director of ADIBF, stated that this recognition aligns with their strategy to support publishing as a cultural cornerstone. "Honouring these institutions helps strengthen their presence and motivates them to expand their efforts," he said. Clear criteria were used for selection, considering historical significance, years of service, and contributions to Arab culture.
The fair's selection process considered each publisher's historical significance, activity level, content quality, cultural value, and ability to adapt. Respect for publishing rights and adherence to UAE laws were also crucial factors. Geographical diversity among exhibitors was maintained to ensure broad participation.
Future Initiatives
The ADIBF provided insights into each publisher's history through panel discussions and podcasts hosted by management teams. These sessions explored their journeys, challenges faced, significant contributions, and early publications. The event highlighted their role in shaping Arab consciousness and strengthening culture.
Through innovative initiatives, the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre aims to revive Arab cultural heritage and honour its pioneers. The Arabic book remains competitive despite digital age challenges due to its inherent flexibility and creativity. Future editions will continue recognising creative figures in publishing fields.
In upcoming years, ADIBF plans to honour translators in 2026, literary editors in 2027, cover designers in 2028, and distinguished printing presses in 2029. These efforts aim to sustain contributions while communicating cultural messages globally.
The initiative complements ADIBF's journey by celebrating cultural institutions that have shaped Arab consciousness. It supports sustainability in publishing while inspiring continued contributions from these houses.
