UN Reports On Deteriorating Humanitarian Crisis In Occupied Palestinian Territory Amid Rising Casualties

The ongoing crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territory has reached alarming levels, according to a senior UN official. Ramiz Alakbarov, speaking to the Security Council from Jerusalem, highlighted the dire situation in Gaza. The region is experiencing severe civilian casualties, widespread displacement, and famine, with no resolution in sight.

Since 23 July, health authorities report that at least 2,553 Palestinians have lost their lives. This includes approximately 271 individuals who were killed while trying to collect aid near militarised distribution sites. Additionally, over 240 journalists have died since the conflict began on 7 October 2023.

The UN and its partners are striving to support Gaza's population despite significant security challenges. Alakbarov noted that current safety measures are inadequate given the high risks involved. He recounted his recent visit to Gaza, where he witnessed humanitarian workers risking their lives under harsh conditions to provide aid.

Alakbarov emphasised the urgent need for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages in Gaza. He stated that decisive action is necessary to resolve the conflict, end the occupation, and restore political dialogue. The international community's consensus is that a two-State solution remains essential for a fair and lasting peace between Israel and Palestine.

He called on global leaders to take concrete steps towards peace during engagements at the UN General Assembly's high-level week in September. Alakbarov stressed that with Gaza facing unimaginable suffering and the West Bank under existential threat, immediate action is imperative.

The situation in Gaza has become so severe that it challenges basic human decency. The West Bank also faces significant threats to its future viability. Alakbarov urged for collective efforts from the international community to address these pressing issues without delay.

The ongoing conflict underscores the necessity for bold initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability in the region. The focus should be on practical measures that can lead to meaningful progress toward resolving this long-standing conflict.
