Sir Bu Nair Island Protected Area Joins IUCN Green List For Environmental Excellence
The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah has announced that Sir Bu Nair Island Protected Area is now part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List. This achievement highlights Sharjah's commitment to sustainable management and biodiversity conservation, reinforcing its status in global environmental sustainability efforts.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA, praised the local task forces, international experts, and evaluation groups for their crucial roles in this accomplishment. She stressed that the island's inclusion on the Green List results from collaborative efforts between EPAA and its partners, showcasing Sharjah's dedication to sustainability and environmental innovation.
Al Suwaidi stated, "This significant achievement is an international acknowledgment of Sharjah's dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity protection, as championed by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. It is also a testament to the Sharjah's continuous efforts to enhance international collaboration in environmental conservation."
Sir Bu Nair Island Protected Area stands out as a leading example of biodiversity and sustainability in the UAE. The island is known for its rich biodiversity and strategic location, providing a sanctuary for rare seabirds and wildlife. Its inclusion in the IUCN Green List is valid until 5th December 2029.
The island's recognition follows compliance with criteria like integrated management, community partnerships, governance principles, and ongoing environmental monitoring. These elements highlight its role as a model for balancing economic growth with natural resource preservation.
Spanning 13 square kilometers in the Arabian Gulf, Sir Bu Nair Island is located 110 kilometers north of Sharjah. Known for its golden sandy beaches and vibrant coral reefs, it was declared a nature reserve in 2000 by an Emiri decree from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi.
International Designations
This designation increased its global significance, leading to its inclusion in the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Additionally, it forms part of the Indian Ocean's South-East Asian Marine Turtle memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The recognition of Sir Bu Nair Island on the IUCN Green List adds to Sharjah’s environmental achievements portfolio. It underscores Sharjah’s strategic focus on sustainability and natural resource preservation, ensuring future generations inherit a balanced environment.
