SIARA 2025 Achieves Record Participation With 790 Global Submissions For Refugee Advocacy
The Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support (SIARA) has seen a remarkable increase in participation for its 9th edition, with 790 submissions. This marks a 49.9% rise in unique nominations compared to the previous year. The award attracted entries from 68 countries across five continents, highlighting the growing global commitment to refugee advocacy and sustainable humanitarian solutions.
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), SIARA is organised by TBHF in collaboration with UNHCR. The award aims to recognise impactful humanitarian efforts and support organisations in sustaining their work.

This year’s submissions came from diverse regions, showcasing the global reach of refugee advocacy efforts. Africa led with 368 submissions, followed by Asia with 229 entries. The MENA region contributed 162 submissions, while Europe and North America added 15 and 14 respectively. Oceania made a smaller yet significant contribution with one submission.
The award's AED500,000 (US$136,000) cash prize is funded entirely by The Big Heart Foundation and not from its donations. It rewards individuals and organisations leading efforts to advocate for refugees’ rights and dignity. SIARA highlights initiatives that provide long-term solutions beyond emergency relief, empowering refugees for lasting resilience.
Alya Obaid Al Musaiebi, Director of TBHF, stated that SIARA’s expansion reflects a global shift towards sustainable solutions for refugee advocacy. "This growth signals a collective global commitment to building futures where displaced communities thrive," she said. SIARA champions those equipping refugees with knowledge and resources for self-reliance.
The surge in participation underscores SIARA’s role in promoting impactful support for refugees globally. Expanding from 53 countries in 2024 to 68 countries in 2025 demonstrates the award's efforts in promoting humanitarian excellence. Notably, this year’s submissions represent 790 unique organisations focused on providing sustainable livelihoods for refugees.
Diverse Contributions Across Continents
From Africa to Oceania, organisations have showcased their dedication to refugee advocacy through SIARA 2025. Top contributions came from countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Uganda, Lebanon, Kenya, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Egypt. New submissions also came from Algeria, Angola, Djibouti, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, and Tokelau.
"This year’s submissions reveal the immense potential of grassroots initiatives rooted in local expertise," said Al Musaiebi. These initiatives integrate culture, education, healthcare, and rights to address urgent needs and systemic barriers. SIARA elevates these models as blueprints for a more equitable future globally.
The diversity of this year's entries highlights the extraordinary reach of humanitarian work worldwide. By recognising those who empower refugees with dignity and opportunity through self-reliance initiatives, SIARA is championing a cause that benefits generations to come.
