Sheikha Bodour Urges Industry Collaboration At Sharjah Booksellers Conference
The 3rd annual Sharjah International Booksellers Conference, held over the recent weekend in Sharjah, has once again underscored its significance as a pivotal gathering for the global publishing industry. With more than 550 professionals from across the world, including Africa, the Arab region, Asia, South America, and Europe, the event highlighted the diverse and dynamic nature of the book industry. Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, inaugurated the event and set a tone of resilience and adaptability amidst the evolving challenges such as technological shifts, changing consumer preferences, online competition, and economic pressures.
The conference aimed to foster a specialized platform for industry professionals to unite and sculpt a forward-looking vision. The inclusion of participants from 76 countries, with notable attendance from Cambodia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, illustrated the event's wide-reaching influence. The two-day agenda was packed with workshops and roundtables on critical topics like the integration of bookstores in shopping malls, effective social media strategies, collaborative efforts between distributors, publishers, and booksellers, and the emerging impact of artificial intelligence on publishing.
A standout session featured Andrea Giunti, Executive Vice-President of Giunti Editore, who highlighted the importance of booksellers maintaining relevance in a rapidly changing market. Furthermore, the conference shone a spotlight on gender equality within the industry through activities organized by PublisHer. Dr Raja Al Gurg, a prominent figure in both business and literature, shared insights into women's empowerment and leadership.
