Sharjah Illuminates Paris With The 20th UNESCO-Arab Culture Award Ceremony Honouring Cultural Contributions

Sharjah recently showcased its cultural influence in Paris by celebrating the winners of the 20th Sharjah-UNESCO Prize for Arab Culture. Organised by Sharjah’s Department of Culture and UNESCO, the event honoured Egyptian artist Aya Tarek and Malian heritage activist Ali Gi Toure. The ceremony took place at UNESCO's headquarters, attended by notable figures including Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais and Gabriela Ramos.

Abdullah Al Owais emphasised the enduring partnership between Sharjah and UNESCO, which has led to numerous cultural initiatives. He stated, "The Sharjah-UNESCO Prize for Arab Culture is now in its 25th year since its inception in 2001. It was established under the directive of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in celebration of Sharjah being named the Arab Cultural Capital in 1998."

Al Owais highlighted Sharjah's cultural achievements since 1998, noting the emirate's commitment to promoting Arab culture globally. He conveyed greetings from H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, expressing pride in the award's mission and congratulating this year's recipients on their success.

Gabriela Ramos praised the collaboration between UNESCO and Sharjah as a model for cultural and humanitarian efforts worldwide. She noted that reaching the 20th edition of the award signifies its global recognition and impact. Ramos described it as a vital part of UNESCO’s programmes, highlighting creativity as a universal value.

Ramos expressed her delight at recognising this year's winners, referring to the award as one sponsored by a "cultured and noble ruler." She hoped creativity would continue to connect people across cultures, serving as both a medium and goal for human interaction.

Ali Al-Haj Al Ali reflected on nearly three decades of the award's history, describing it as a symbol of pride in Arab culture. He noted that it strengthens cultural dialogue and knowledge exchange among diverse peoples. The ceremony highlighted Arab culture's value and its role in fostering human connections through art.

Honouring Cultural Contributions

Al Ali commended H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for his visionary leadership in establishing this award, which underscores Sharjah’s role in preserving Arab heritage. Over the years, it has honoured 40 creatives who have significantly contributed to Arab culture.

This year’s prize celebrated two new laureates who have enriched the Arab cultural landscape: Aya Tarek for her artistic contributions and Ali Gi Elven Toure as a non-Arab honouree. Their recognition adds to a distinguished group fostering understanding between global cultures.

The ceremony concluded with Abdullah Al Owais, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, and Gabriela Ramos presenting awards to Aya Tarek and Ali Gi Elven Toure for their outstanding contributions to Arab culture.
