Sharjah's Tourism Sector Welcomes Over 1 Million Hotel Guests In First Eight Months Of 2024

Sharjah's tourism industry has seen significant growth in the first eight months of 2024. Hotel guest numbers rose by 3.07 percent, reaching 1.057 million compared to 1.025 million in the same period last year. Hotel occupancy rates remained stable at 66 percent. These figures were shared at the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority's (SCTDA) annual 'Connected Meeting' held at the Sharjah Research, Technology, and Innovation Park.

From January to August 2024, Russia emerged as Sharjah's top source market, contributing 21 percent of the market share. India followed with 10 percent, while Oman accounted for 6 percent. Domestic tourism from within the UAE made up 11 percent of the total share. The meeting highlighted advancements in Sharjah’s tourism sector and efforts to improve service quality and visitor experiences.

The SCTDA meeting also showcased new tourist destinations and marine transport services in Sharjah. Future plans focus on strengthening strategic partnerships both locally and internationally. Key initiatives include launching marketing campaigns targeting emerging markets and using AI solutions and digital platforms to expand reach. The authority is committed to creating engaging events and experiences.

Coinciding with World Tourism Day on September 27, SCTDA reaffirmed its dedication to advancing tourism sustainably. This aligns with best practices to enhance Sharjah’s appeal as a preferred destination. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, stressed public-private partnerships' importance in achieving sustainable development goals during his keynote address.

Al Midfa highlighted that this annual event demonstrates successful collaboration among tourism stakeholders, reflecting H.H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi's vision for tourism as a key economic pillar. "Sharjah has ambitious plans to further enhance the tourism sector," he stated, noting its contribution of over 11 percent to the UAE’s non-oil GDP.

Infrastructure and Strategic Initiatives

Sharjah is investing heavily in infrastructure, including expanding Sharjah International Airport and organising year-round events to boost tourism. By fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the emirate aims to elevate service quality consistently and strengthen its status as a premier global tourist destination.

During the meeting, SCTDA discussed its "Business Continuity Management System." This system ensures essential services continue even during emergencies or crises by aligning with national standards for business continuity management. It includes incident management plans, measures to protect resources and infrastructure, and effective communication with partners.

The announcement underscores tourism's vital role in driving economic, social, cultural, and environmental development in Sharjah. By focusing on sustainability and strategic partnerships, Sharjah aims to maintain its position as a leading tourist destination while contributing significantly to the UAE's economy through non-oil sectors.
