Sharjah Champions Arab Culture At The Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2024

The emirate of Sharjah is making significant strides as a beacon of Arab culture at the 61st Bologna Children's Book Fair (BCBF) in Italy, running from 8th to 11th April, 2024. The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is at the forefront, leading a delegation that highlights the emirate’s rich cultural landscape and its dedication to supporting authors and illustrators. This participation underscores Sharjah's commitment to the publishing sector, libraries, and creative industries, aligning with the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

With over 1,500 exhibitors from nearly 100 countries, the BCBF serves as an ideal platform for Sharjah to foster collaboration and exchange in the children’s book industry. The Sharjah delegation includes notable cultural entities like Al Qasimi Publications, the Department of Culture, Arab Children's Book Publisher Forum, the Etisalat Award for Arabic Children's Literature, and the Turjuman Award. These organizations are showcasing their initiatives at the Sharjah pavilion, aiming to strengthen cultural ties and cooperation globally.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, expressed enthusiasm about Sharjah’s role in enriching global culture and boosting the local publishing industry. He highlighted the emirate's efforts to enhance partnerships and forge new connections within the children's book sector. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage creativity and innovation in promoting Arab literature worldwide.

The BCBF is not only a venue for showcasing books but also a platform for Sharjah to promote its own literary events. These include the Sharjah International Book Fair, Publishers Conference, Sharjah Children’s Book Fair, and newer initiatives like the Children’s Animation Conference. Such events have significantly contributed to strengthening the publishing sector and encouraging translation activities across various cultures.

This year's BCBF has introduced new initiatives aimed at expanding its reach and inclusivity. The TV/Film Rights Centre connects creators with media adaptation opportunities, while collaborations with the United Nations and the Society of Illustrators in New York highlight BCBF's dedication to supporting emerging and minority markets in children's literature.

Through its active participation in the BCBF, Sharjah continues to affirm its position as a key player in promoting Arab culture on a global stage. The emirate’s efforts not only showcase its commitment to cultural development but also open avenues for international cooperation in the literary world.
