Sharjah's Tourism Flourishes With Over 400,000 European Visitors In 2023

In a significant development for the tourism sector, Sharjah has reported a remarkable 28 percent increase in European visitors in 2023, with over 400,000 guests from the European market. This surge in visitors, who now constitute 27 percent of the total visitor count, underscores Sharjah's growing appeal as a destination among European tourists. The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) shared these insights during a press conference at ITB Berlin 2024, the world's premier travel trade show, which is ongoing until March 7.

Under the theme 'Pioneer the Transition in Travel & Tourism. Together', Sharjah's participation at ITB Berlin 2024 aims to showcase its comprehensive vision for tourism. The emirate is highlighting its key landmarks and unique tourist destinations, which have made it especially popular among German tourists, who are the second-largest group of Western European visitors to Sharjah.

Sharjah's Boom in European Tourism in 2023

The Sharjah Pavilion at the event brings together 19 government and private entities to present a diverse range of tourism, hospitality, cultural, and entertainment offerings. This collaboration aims to reinforce Sharjah's position as a leading tourist destination in the region. The delegation from Sharjah has also engaged in meetings with investors and business leaders, as well as conducted interviews with the European media to spotlight the emirate's active role and latest innovations in the tourism sector.

Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA, commented on this achievement, stating that the increase in European visitors is a testament to the success of their strategic development initiatives. He emphasized that this success not only contributes positively to Sharjah's economy but also enhances its reputation among European tourists. Al Midfa expressed commitment to further innovation in tourism services and experiences to attract more European tourists and investments into Sharjah's tourism infrastructure.

At ITB Berlin 2024, Sharjah's pavilion is showcasing its celebrated tourist attractions through advanced technologies like augmented reality experiences, virtual reality simulations, and an immersive metaverse known as ‘SharjahVerse’. Visitors can explore Sharjah's commitment to conserving cultural, environmental, and archaeological treasures and enjoy a wide range of experiences suitable for all ages.

Highlights from the pavilion include a high-speed boat journey with the Sharjah Formula 1 team, a kayaking-simulated adventure with the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, and a virtual journey through the evolution of the automotive industry by the Sharjah Classic Cars Club. Additionally, a virtual safari tour in collaboration with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) offers an opportunity to explore Sharjah's diverse ecosystems. The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) is also providing an exceptional VR experience showcasing its finest hospitality destinations and projects that reflect its commitment to authenticity and cultural preservation.
