Sharjah School Librarians Conference Highlights Technology's Role In Enhancing Reading Engagement

The Sharjah School Librarians Conference, organised by the Sharjah Book Authority, wrapped up at Expo Centre Sharjah. Over two days, 170 education professionals, including international experts, school librarians, and teachers, engaged in discussions. The event was held in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA), Emirates Library and Information Association (ELIA), American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and Combined Book Exhibit.

During the conference, successful case studies and innovative strategies were showcased to engage students, parents, and the community. The role of modern technologies in promoting reading was also highlighted. Todd Burleson from The Skokie School in the United States led a session on connecting reading with new technologies. He explored how digital tools like audiobooks and virtual reality can transform school libraries.

Technology Boosts Reading at Sharjah Conference

Yasser Abdul Muttalib from Al Majd Model School in Sharjah and Jumana Hanoun, a librarian and UNESCO programme coordinator, shared insights on creating dynamic reading environments using technology. They emphasised how these tools can foster engaging experiences for students. This aligns with the conference's focus on integrating technology to enhance student engagement.

Another session titled ‘Connecting and partnering with families’ stressed parents' crucial role in developing long-term reading habits among students. Engaging families is seen as vital for fostering a love for reading that extends beyond school walls.

Becky Calzada, President of AASL, led a session on empowering school librarians through associations. She highlighted the importance of collective action and knowledge exchange among professionals. Calzada noted that professional associations are essential platforms for sharing resources and advancing skills.

The conference also featured a ‘Knowledge Café’, an informal forum where attendees could interact with experts and peers. Topics discussed included strategies for supporting reluctant readers, assessing student learning, building collaboration between librarians and teachers, integrating technology with reading, engaging families, and empowering local talents.

Future Initiatives

The event concluded with a session titled "Sharing and next steps", where UAE-based school librarians reflected on advancing reading initiatives in local schools. Participants received certificates acknowledging their involvement. Attendees agreed on the importance of continuing such gatherings to expand the role of school libraries across the Arab world.
