Sharjah Ruler Explores Historical Manuscripts At Biblioteca Ambrosiana In Milan

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, visited Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan on Friday. This library, established in 1609, is among the oldest in the world.

Upon arrival, His Highness was welcomed by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Sharjah Book Authority; Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Emirates airline's divisional senior vice president; Abdullah Ali Al Subousi, UAE Ambassador to Italy; Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of Sharjah Book Authority; Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Institute for Heritage; Dr. Sultan Al Amimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Writers Union; Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Broadcast Authority; Issa Abbas, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority; and several senior officials and editors-in-chief of Emirati newspapers.

Library Tour and Manuscripts

During his visit to the library, His Highness explored various sections showcasing a wealth of knowledge in sciences, culture, history and art. He was introduced to significant manuscripts and collections dating back centuries. The library houses works from prominent Italian thinkers and intellectuals who studied there.

The library's collection includes more than 15,000 manuscripts and 30,000 books. Among its treasures are the Atlantic Codex—12 manuscripts containing Leonardo da Vinci's drawings and notes—and contributions from patrons worldwide. The Arabic manuscript collection is particularly notable for its breadth and significance.

Islamic and Arabic Manuscripts

His Highness examined some of the most important Islamic and Arabic manuscripts held by the library. These include one of the oldest copies of the Holy Quran written in Kufic script from the second century AH. Other notable items are an ancient copy of Sibawayh's book on grammar, a medical manuscript combining medicine with narration, and a collection of Arab tales.

The library also boasts manuscripts on diverse subjects such as history, language, medicine and astronomy. Additionally, it holds manuscripts on the Prophet's hadith and various geographical maps.

Sharjah-Italian Cooperation

His Highness reviewed outcomes from cooperation between Sharjah and Biblioteca Ambrosiana. This partnership led to digitising over 2,500 rare Arabic manuscripts dating back more than 450 years. These are now available digitally for the first time through Sharjah Public Library's electronic platform.

The collaboration has made these valuable texts accessible to a global audience via the platform managed by Sharjah Book Authority.

Historical Significance

Biblioteca Ambrosiana was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan to serve as an open research library. Its extensive collection includes historical works provided by artists, academics and collectors globally.

The visit highlighted ongoing cultural exchange efforts between Sharjah and Italy while showcasing Biblioteca Ambrosiana’s rich heritage. This visit underscores His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi's commitment to preserving cultural heritage through international collaboration.
