Sharjah Ruler Awards AED 20 Million To Sharjah Football Club After AFC Champions League Victory
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, highlighted the significance of persistent efforts and dedication in achieving international sporting success. He emphasised that these accomplishments reflect positively on the nation. His Highness also underscored the importance of educating young athletes, promoting sportsmanship, and fostering cooperation among all football community members, including players, staff, and fans.
During a reception at Al Badi’ Palace for Sharjah Football Club's team, following their victory in the AFC Champions League 2 against Singapore’s Lion City Sailors with a score of 2–1, His Highness announced a reward of AED 20 million for the team. This recognition was for their historic achievement of winning the AFC Champions League 2 title for the first time in both the club's and UAE's history.
The triumph marked a significant milestone for Emirati football. His Highness congratulated the players and staff on this remarkable accomplishment. He expressed his hope that this victory would lead to further successes for the UAE national team. "We congratulate the officials of the UAE, the Emirati people, and all residents in the country on this victory that came after years of anticipation. We hope this joy continues with upcoming wins by the UAE national team," he stated.
His Highness stressed building a strong national team through intensified group training to ensure player synergy. He advised players to prioritise national loyalty over club affiliations when representing the UAE. "When playing for the national team, your loyalty should be to the country, not to your club," he told them. "You are now carrying the flag of the UAE, so you must give your best and put aside local league rivalries."
Praising Coach Cosmin's appointment as head coach, His Highness noted past coaches often lacked familiarity with players' skills. With Cosmin’s leadership, players now bear responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to the national team. His Highness encouraged them to make personal vows to excel for their country and wished Sharjah FC success in selecting a new coach who could contribute like Cosmin did.
His Highness shared his personal interest in football, particularly regarding national teams. He reminisced about following matches before qualifying for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy daily due to his love for his country and its players. "This comes from our love for our country and our children who play for it," he remarked.
Guidance for Future Success
In closing remarks, His Highness urged club managements to focus on educating players about responsibility while avoiding interference in referees' decisions during matches. A single mistake could cost victory and render efforts futile. Collective cooperation is essential to ensure matches reflect good sportsmanship and fair competition.
The reception was attended by several dignitaries including Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Finance Department; Sheikh Khaled bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Ports Authority; Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of Department of Statistics; along with senior sports officials.
The administrative staff and players expressed gratitude towards His Highness for his generous support which played a crucial role in their success on an Asian level podium. They appreciated his continuous encouragement affirming commitment towards representing UAE honourably internationally while striving towards more titles.
