Sharjah Ruler Discusses Archaeological Significance With International Experts At Al Fayha Site
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, welcomed a group of international archaeology experts at the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre. The meeting, which included Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, focused on the archaeological and historical significance of the Mleiha region. Discussions also covered Sharjah's efforts to preserve these sites while adhering to UNESCO regulations.
Sharjah has been actively working to protect its archaeological sites through ongoing excavations and by ensuring no development interferes with heritage areas. These efforts align with UNESCO's guidelines, highlighting the emirate's commitment to maintaining its cultural heritage. The focus is on preserving these sites for future generations while sharing their historical importance globally.
The Al Fayha region holds particular significance as one of the most important Stone Age sites in the Arabian Peninsula and worldwide. It provides crucial insights into early human migration patterns. The area is rich in archaeological discoveries, making it a strong candidate for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Al Fayha mountain site stands out as an exceptional example of a desert environment during the Stone Age. It documents early human settlement from the Middle Stone Age to the Stone Age amid changing climatic conditions in the Arabian Peninsula. Studies have shown continuous human habitation at this site for 210,000 years.
Previously, Sharjah had placed four significant archaeological sites on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list after extensive studies with academic experts. These include Mleiha from the pre-Islamic period, rock engravings in Khatam al-Melahah and Khorfakkan, Wadi Al Helo known for Bronze Age copper mining, and prehistoric cultural scenes in Al Fayha.
The aim of listing Al Fayha as a World Heritage Site is to safeguard its cultural heritage for future generations and promote it globally. This initiative underscores Sharjah's dedication to preserving its rich history and sharing it with the world.
