Sharjah's Ruler Initiates Project To Safeguard Endangered Arabian Tahr

On a notable day, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a distinguished member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, officially inaugurated the Arabian Tahr project at Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre in Kalba. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide a vast natural habitat for the breeding of the endangered Arabian Tahr. Alongside this, the deer canopy area was also opened, offering visitors a shaded platform from which to observe the deer in their natural surroundings.

The inauguration was marked by Sheikh Dr. Sultan receiving an in-depth briefing on the conservation efforts aimed at preserving rare and endangered species, including the Arabian Tahr and the Nubian Ibex. These efforts have seen success with the resettlement of these species in Al Hajar Mountains. The expansion of Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre underscores its pivotal role in nurturing the mountainous environment and bolstering Sharjah's commitment to environmental and biological diversity preservation.

Project to Protect Arabian Tahr Launched

Sheikh Dr. Sultan's visit also included a tour of the deer shelters, which he had directed to be constructed along the fence of Hefaiyah Protected Area on Kalba Road. This initiative aims to attract tourists, visitors, and nature enthusiasts to the area. During his visit, he witnessed the release of several endangered mountain gazelles into the reserve, ensuring their survival within their natural habitat.

The umbrella area, another significant feature of this project, was highlighted for its architectural and engineering marvels that enhance Kalba's aesthetic appeal. With 26 umbrellas providing shade and separation from the reserve for safety, this area offers a serene rest spot for sports enthusiasts and families alike. The design incorporates classic elements mixed with Islamic architecture, reflecting Kalba's unique architectural identity.

This project includes a 2.6 km service road and a 2.1 km walkway, with adjacent spaces planted with native mountainous plants to enrich the area's atmosphere. Additionally, 740 parking spaces have been provided to accommodate visitors.

Al Hefaiyah Protected Area is home to over 30 different species of mountain animals, showcasing the rich biodiversity of Al Hajar Mountains adjacent to Kalba. The Arabian Tahr, classified as endangered, is known for its diurnal habits and preference for rugged mountain slopes near water sources. Similarly, the Nubian ibex and Arabian gazelle are highlighted for their unique characteristics and contributions to the region's biodiversity.

The inauguration was attended by Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention; along with senior officials, heads and directors of government departments, and notables from Kalba city. This event underscores Sharjah's ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and the protection of endangered species within its territories.
