Sharjah Ruler H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Launches Second Edition Of SICALE Conference On Arabic Language Studies

H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has announced the completion of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language. This extensive work comprises 127 volumes and marks a significant achievement for Sharjah under Dr. Sheikh Sultan's leadership in culture, literature, and the Arabic language for Arab and Islamic nations.

The announcement was made during the Second Sharjah International Conference on Arabic Language Studies in Europe (SICALE), organised by the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah at the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre. The event welcomed scholars and researchers from across Europe, celebrating this monumental accomplishment.

Dr. Sheikh Sultan expressed his joy over completing the dictionary, stating, "Your presence today, as we celebrate the completion of this monumental work, fills us with joy and pride. This is truly a moment of celebration, a testament to our collective efforts." The dictionary was developed over seven years by 500 researchers and nearly 200 proofreaders, reviewers, and printers.

The Ruler of Sharjah highlighted ongoing efforts to establish more cultural centres that support Arabic culture and language. He also mentioned plans for an Arabic Encyclopedia covering literary and scientific fields as a primary reference for everyone.

The conference began with Quranic verses followed by Mohammed Safi Al Mosteghanemi's speech. As Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy (ALA), he welcomed attendees and praised Dr. Sheikh Sultan's commitment to promoting the Arabic language through learning, teaching, literature, and culture.

Mistaghani emphasised collaboration among scholars to enhance Arabic language dissemination across Europe. He noted that the Arab Studies Conference aims to address research goals and challenges while promoting learning in various European countries.

International Participation

Laura Gago addressed attendees on behalf of conference guests, commending Sharjah's role in supporting Arabic language initiatives in Europe. She stated that Sharjah has become a thriving hub for language enthusiasts: "We have come from all corners of Europe...to discuss the Arabic language in the modern capital of Arab culture."

She acknowledged non-native speakers' conscious choice to embrace Arabic: "The Arabic language reigns supreme among human languages...our love for Arabic...is a conscious choice." Gago concluded with gratitude towards ALA for organising such a successful event.

Cultural Exchange

Dr. Dragana Georgievich expressed gratitude on behalf of attendees for Dr. Sheikh Sultan's support of Arabic education initiatives in Europe: "Here in Sharjah, we feel at home." She highlighted how this conference fosters collaboration among scholars promoting Arabic globally.

The conference featured scholars from Romania, Kazakhstan, Spain, Norway, Poland, Russia, Germany, Serbia, Croatia, Denmark, Turkey, France, Greece, and Italy presenting research papers on themes related to learning and teaching Arabic along with challenges faced.

Diverse Topics Explored

The conference explored topics like Arab tales in Western literature such as 'One Thousand and One Nights,' contemporary technology's impact on language; translation issues; portrayal of Arabs in travel literature; interpretation methodologies; characteristics of manuscripts; leveraging global expertise for promoting Arabic worldwide using innovative methods.

This second edition took place on 21st-22nd September covering serious studies reflecting reality within Europe alongside practical experiences shared by participants aiming at enhancing understanding between cultures through effective communication strategies focused around key areas discussed throughout sessions held during these two days dedicated entirely towards advancing knowledge about one another's linguistic heritage while benefiting from shared insights gained collectively together here today under auspices provided graciously by hosts themselves who ensured everything ran smoothly without any hitches whatsoever ensuring success achieved beyond expectations set initially beforehand making sure everyone left feeling satisfied knowing they contributed positively towards achieving
