Sheikh Sultan Opens New Poetry House Headquarters In Sharjah

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the new Poetry House headquarters in the Heart of Sharjah area. During the ceremony, he unveiled a memorial plaque and delivered a speech to poets, writers, and media professionals. He highlighted poetry's importance in society and expressed his commitment to following the House of Poetry's activities in Sharjah and other Arab cities.

The opening event featured recitations by Emirati poets Abdullah Al Hadiyya, Sheikha Al Mutairi, and Ali Al Shaali. They shared their poetic experiences and the emotional depth of their compositions. The new Poetry House location includes various facilities and halls, serving as a cultural hub for poets and speakers. It enriches Sharjah's cultural offerings by providing an environment conducive to creativity.

Sheikh Dr. Sultan discussed poetry's roots in Arab heritage, tracing its origins back to tribal gatherings in Mecca and the Nabataean era. He explained that "poetry" originally meant "knowledge," not just verse or rhyme. The Nabataeans used poetry as a communication tool, referring to it as Nabataean media for conveying messages.

The Sharjah Ruler provided a detailed historical account of events shaping poetry today. He explored the Arabs' origins around the Zamzam Well and their irrigation roles. He also traced Nabat's descendants' rule in Mecca after Ibrahim's departure, highlighting the Nabataeans' migration to southern Palestine and their lineage identification.

The Poetry House is dedicated to nurturing emerging talents and supporting Arabic poetry enthusiasts' cultural pursuits. It plays a vital role in fostering sustainable cultural development through poetry evenings, festivals, seminars, awards, and workshops aimed at nurturing new poets' skills.

Aligned with Sheikh Dr. Sultan's vision to promote Arabic poetry globally, similar houses are established across Arab cities. These institutions foster a vibrant cultural movement throughout the year by supporting poets worldwide.

During his address, Sheikh Dr. Sultan praised the organisers of the Al Qawafi Cultural Magazine Competition for selecting top poems annually. He stressed the importance of an impartial committee overseeing this process to ensure unbiased evaluation free from undue influence.

The Ruler extended his best wishes for success while emphasising honest evaluation and careful consideration when selecting poems for recognition.
