Sharjah Ruler Opens New Marine Science Research Centre To Enhance Environmental Studies
H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre in Khorfakkan. This centre is affiliated with the University of Khorfakkan, where he also serves as President. During the opening ceremony, he unveiled a commemorative plaque and toured the facility's various sections.
The centre features 12 specialised laboratories focusing on fields such as histology, wet labs, microbiology, and environmental analysis. Additionally, it houses an Advanced Microscopy Centre and a Marine Chemistry Analysis Unit. Facilities for remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) are also available. The infrastructure includes an experimental tank system, a seawater treatment plant, a marine research port, and a scientific diving training facility.
Students at the centre engage in research projects under academic supervision. These projects involve fieldwork and data analysis that contribute to global research publications. Such efforts enhance the UAE's and Sharjah's status in international organisations. The students' practical training is part of a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Marine and Aquatic Sciences offered in partnership with the University of Exeter (UK).
Graduates from this programme receive professional certifications like scientific diving. They are well-prepared for careers across government, private, and academic sectors. Students expressed gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for his support in providing facilities that enhance their academic journey.
A group of students from the College of Marine and Aquatic Sciences won first place in the Sharjah Government Communication Award – Universities Challenge category for their project "Ocean Sustainability." They showcased a prototype submarine equipped with smart sensing technologies to monitor marine environments and develop innovative solutions for protection.
The Ruler of Sharjah also visited classrooms and the centre’s library, which contains numerous marine science reference books. He reviewed academic partnerships with institutions like the University of Exeter, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, National Oceanography Centre, and University of Cambridge.
Global Collaborations
These collaborations aim to achieve leadership in marine research through multidisciplinary cooperation and engagement with renowned scientists. The centre aims to become a world-leading institution in marine science research and ocean sustainability, supporting the UAE’s economic growth by advancing the sustainable blue economy.
The inauguration was attended by Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Ports; Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi; Amna Al Dhahak Al Shamsi; Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi; senior officials; and members of the University of Khorfakkan Board of Trustees.
Acknowledging Contributions
Honorary professorship certificates from the University of Exeter were presented to Dr Ali Hilal Alnaqbi, Dr Steven Kidman, and Dr Henrik Stahl for their contributions to establishing and managing the centre. Their efforts focus on safeguarding marine environments while advancing initiatives beneficial to humanity and nature.
The centre represents a significant step forward in educational and research opportunities for students. It supports national efforts to protect marine environments while sustaining natural resources aligned with Sharjah’s development vision.
