Sharjah's Ruler Establishes New Board For Performing Arts Academy

In a significant development for the cultural landscape of Sharjah, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has enacted administrative decision No. (4) of 2024, establishing the Board of Trustees (BoT) for the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA). This move underscores the emirate's commitment to fostering the arts and supporting cultural institutions.

The decree appoints the Ruler of Sharjah himself as the president of the SPAA's BoT, highlighting the importance of this initiative. The board comprises a distinguished group of members from various sectors related to culture, arts, and education, reflecting a broad spectrum of expertise and passion for the performing arts.

New SPAA Board Formed

Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi takes on the role of Vice President, bringing her extensive experience as President of the Sharjah Art Foundation to the table. The board also includes Dr. Peter Barlow, the Director of SPAA, and Dr. Nadia Al Hassani, Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Sharjah, among others. Each member has been carefully selected for their contributions to the cultural and educational fields, ensuring a rich diversity of perspectives and skills.

The decision outlines that board membership will last for three years, with the possibility of renewal for similar periods at the discretion of the ruler. This term will commence from the board's first meeting, during which they will embark on their mission to guide and develop SPAA's offerings and initiatives. The provision for reappointment ensures continuity and allows for sustained progress in achieving the academy's goals.

SPAA stands as a beacon for aspiring performers in the region, offering world-class education and training in various aspects of performing arts. Under this new leadership structure, it is poised to enhance its contributions to Sharjah's cultural scene and beyond. The formation of this board marks a new chapter in SPAA's journey towards excellence in performing arts education and promotion.

The inclusion of members such as Ahmed Mohammed Bou Rahimah and Ismail Abdullah Ismail underscores a commitment to integrating traditional and contemporary theatrical practices. Additionally, figures like Dr. Habib Ghaloum Al Attar and Kassem Istanbuli bring a wealth of experience that spans across cultural advising and theatre founding respectively.

Suad Abdullah's involvement further enriches the board with insights from her illustrious career in acting across the Gulf and Arab world. This collective expertise is set to drive SPAA towards new heights in nurturing talent and enriching the performing arts landscape.

This strategic formation by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi not only reinforces Sharjah's position as a hub for culture and education but also reflects a forward-thinking approach to cultivating artistic talent in the UAE and beyond.
