His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, attended the third season harvest ceremony of Saba Sanabel wheat in Mleiha. This season's wheat achieved a protein content of 19.3 percent, indicating high-quality production. Before the event, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan launched new organic products made from Saba Sanabel flour, including pasta, vermicelli, croissants, cakes, biscuits, semolina, and traditional Arabic bread.

The Ruler of Sharjah engaged with Emirati farmers who receive seeds and equipment from the Sharjah Agriculture and Livestock Department under his directives. The harvesting process at the wheat farm employed advanced machinery with three specialised machines: one for separating grains from straw, another for collecting straw, and a third for compressing it into bales. The Ruler of Sharjah and attendees witnessed this process, marking the official start of the third season harvest.

Dr. Khalifa Musabah Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock and CEO of Sharjah Agriculture and Livestock Production EST., highlighted the unwavering support from the Sharjah Ruler in enhancing food security. This year's harvest covers 1,428 hectares across 37 sections with an expected yield of 6,000 tons of organic wheat.

Dr. Al Tunaiji announced that Saba Sanabel wheat achieved a protein content of 19.3 percent this season compared to 18.1 percent in its first season when it set a global record. He praised the Ruler's vision for adopting an organic farming model that improves soil fertility annually.

The third season featured three distinct wheat varieties: Yokora Rojo from Saudi Arabia and Egypt 3 and Egypt 4 from Egypt. These varieties showed remarkable yield and robust stalks in experimental plots with higher protein content in Sharjah than their country of origin.

Innovative Agricultural Practices

Corn silage was planted on 12.5 hectares as a trial phase to provide green fodder for cattle, producing over 500 tons of easily digestible feed. Plans are underway to expand summer farming with leguminous forage crops to ensure crop rotation between grass and legumes for organic feed supply.

The CEO stated that agricultural researchers are developing new experimental wheat strains aiming to create "Sharjah 1." The third season saw cultivation of 1,450 non-GMO soft and hard wheat strains, doubling previous seasons' numbers.

Research Advancements

The hybridisation program has progressed with parent plants increasing to 45 selected in the second season. These plants underwent research at the UAE's first Biotechnology Laboratory equipped with advanced technology for physiological measurements and molecular analysis to determine genetic lineage.

Dr. Al Tunaiji concluded by thanking the Ruler for his vision and commitment to development and sustainability: "Language cannot fully convey the extent of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan's contributions to the nation."

Cultural Celebrations

The ceremony featured a traditional "Taghrooda" performance by children expressing gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan for providing healthy organic food. Additionally, he viewed a video titled "A Touch of Loyalty," featuring individuals sharing experiences with Iktifa's organic food highlighting health improvements.

A documentary segment focused on Japanese farmer Yoshiki Yamamoto known for clean organic farming expertise showcased Sharjah’s sustainable agriculture model inspired by H.H.'s vision transforming desert into an organic farm.

Acknowledging Contributions

At the ceremony's end, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan honoured strategic partners whose support contributed significantly to Mleiha wheat farm's success by presenting commemorative shields and taking group photos in appreciation.

H.H also received a commemorative gift from ICARDA recognising his efforts in agriculture sector food security underscoring commitment fostering healthy organic production encouraging sustainable methods.
