Sharjah Public Libraries Unveils Folk Poetry Exhibition Honouring Traditional Emirati Poets

Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) has launched the Folk Poetry exhibition at Kalba Waterfront as part of its 100-year celebrations. This event, in collaboration with heritage researcher Dr. Rashid Ahmed Al Mazrouei, honours traditional Emirati poetry and the poets who have contributed to the nation's cultural heritage through their verses.

The exhibition, open until 19th October, showcases works from 14 late Emirati poets. It includes selected poems and rare audio recordings that highlight their personal experiences and creative contributions. These materials illustrate the diverse poetic styles they represent and their role in shaping the UAE’s cultural identity.

SPL encourages visitors to explore Nabati poetry's literary and social importance through this initiative. The exhibition provides insights into how this form of poetry has expressed and preserved Emirati identity over generations. It aligns with SPL’s mission to connect younger audiences with their literary heritage and strengthen ties to cultural traditions.

Eman Bushulaibi, Director of SPL, commented on the event's significance: "This exhibition is a key part of our centenary programme and affirms our ongoing commitment to preserving the UAE’s cultural memory. It recognises the poets whose work captured the rhythms of everyday life and expressed the values of their time."

Nabati poetry has historically served as a record of social identity and cultural continuity. Through this exhibition, SPL aims to reintroduce this literary heritage to new generations while honouring the voices that have shaped the UAE’s collective consciousness. The initiative highlights SPL's dedication to preserving cultural memory for future generations.

The Folk Poetry exhibition not only celebrates past poets but also invites current audiences to engage with a rich literary tradition. By showcasing these works, SPL reinforces its commitment to maintaining a connection between contemporary society and its historical roots.
