Sharjah Museums Authority Marks International Museum Day With Free Entry And Engaging Activities

Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) is offering free entry to all its museums on Sunday, May 18, to celebrate International Museum Day. This initiative is part of a series of interactive events from May 15 to 22. These activities aim to highlight the evolving role of museums in addressing cultural and societal changes.

This year's theme for International Museum Day is "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Societies." It emphasises the need for museums to adapt to digital and societal shifts while safeguarding intangible heritage. The theme also focuses on empowering youth and using technology to enhance museum roles.

Celebrating International Museum Day in Sharjah

The vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi aligns with this theme. He sees museums as crucial centres for knowledge, identity, and cultural awareness. Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director General of SMA, stated: "This occasion reaffirms our commitment to delivering high-quality museum experiences that promote lifelong learning and strengthen the connection between museums and their communities."

Deemas added that SMA aims to make its museums dynamic spaces for dialogue, discovery, and education. They are reimagining visitor experiences to be more inclusive and aligned with cultural and digital trends. "Sharjah Museums remain open and accessible to all," she concluded.

The celebration includes four main activations designed for all age groups. From May 15 to 22, visitors can explore themed workshops across Sharjah’s museums. Activities like designing future museums or digitally illustrating marine life combine fun with learning.

Another activation is "Experience Museums with All Your Senses" at City Centre Al Zahia from May 15 to 18. This immersive experience engages sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell through exhibits from Sharjah’s museum collections.

Engaging Narratives and Technological Integration

A guided tour titled "A Walk Through Living Heritage" will occur at the Sharjah Heritage Museum on May 16 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Led by Emirati storyteller Mouza Binhdhaiba, known as Umm Azan, it offers a personal connection to Emirati customs and traditions.

An invitation-only Focus Group Session called "Innovation in Action: Technology’s Role in Shaping Museum Experiences" will be held at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization on May 17. It gathers professionals from various fields to discuss integrating technology into museum experiences.

Cultural Engagement Through Illuminated Landmarks

SMA will illuminate several landmark buildings from May 18 to 20 as part of the celebrations. This includes SMA’s Headquarters, Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Fort, Sharjah Art Museum, and the Resistance Monument. Each site becomes a beacon of cultural pride through this gesture.

These initiatives reflect SMA's commitment to enhancing visitor engagement through inclusive programs showcasing Sharjah's cultural richness. The illuminated landmarks transform the emirate into a living tribute to heritage and creativity beyond museum walls.
