Mleiha National Park Embodies Sharjah’s Vision For Sustainable Heritage Conservation

The Mleiha desert in Sharjah is undergoing a significant transformation, set to become a national park dedicated to the conservation of the region's natural and archaeological history. Spanning 34-square kilometers, this initiative marks the first national park of its kind within the Emirate of Sharjah, aiming to highlight the area's historical significance dating back 200,000 years. The project, spearheaded by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), underscores a deep commitment to sustainability and the preservation of the UAE's rich heritage.

This ambitious project aligns with Shurooq's vision for sustainable development and aims to bolster Sharjah's reputation as a leading destination for investment and tourism, particularly in the historical and cultural sectors. Mleiha is renowned for its significant historical and anthropological heritage, earning it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site nominee list. The development of Mleiha National Park is currently in progress, with expectations to complete the fencing of the premises by Q3 2024.

The park will be divided into three main areas: the Core Conservation Zone, the Ecotourism Zones, and the Hybrid Zone. These sections will concentrate on preserving the natural landscape, offering eco-friendly accommodations, adventures, educational activities, and ensuring a balance between conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices. Additionally, the park will feature a range of educational and recreational activities alongside opportunities for scientific research, adhering to the highest environmental, social, and governance standards.

A decree has been issued to protect the Mleiha National Park from activities that could damage its aesthetic value or harm wildlife. This includes prohibitions on hunting, damaging geological formations, pollution, military activities, and the destruction of flora. Furthermore, leisure, entertainment, and sports activities that could negatively impact wildlife are also banned.

The conservation strategy for the park emphasizes responsible stewardship through initiatives such as native plant restoration, wildlife reintroduction programs, and comprehensive protection of geological formations. Existing assets within the park, including the Mleiha Archaeological Centre and various retreats and camping sites, will remain key components of the national park experience.

By designating the Mleiha desert as a protected area, authorities aim not only to preserve significant historical sites but also to promote unique and sustainable ecotourism opportunities. The establishment of Mleiha National Park is poised to safeguard the legacy of early humanity, archaeology, and natural heritage in Mleiha for future generations, making it one of the region's most valuable archaeological treasures.
