Sharjah Ruler Honours Winners Of The Linguistic Lexical Studies Award For Linguistic And Lexicographic Excellence
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, honoured researchers winning the eighth Sharjah Linguistic Lexical Studies Award during a ceremony at Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre, recognising leading studies in linguistics and lexicography and announcing the academic themes that will guide the ninth edition scheduled for 2026.
The award, supervised by the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, covered linguistic and lexicographical research submitted by specialists from across the Arab world. During the event, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi personally recognised the winners in each category and received their publications, underscoring the role of scientific work in supporting the Arabic language.
In the Linguistics category: Textual Linguistic Studies, Dr. Marwa Mustafa Al Sayed secured first place for the research titled "Collocations in Contemporary Journalistic Language: An Applied Study of a Number of Arab Newspapers (2009–2010)." Second place in this category went to Dr Issa Ouda Barhouma for the study "The Nakedness of the Text: Linguistic Studies in Poetry and Narrative."
The Lexicography category: Dictionaries Compiled on the Terminology of Arabic Linguistic Sciences, also produced two recognised works. First place was awarded to Dr Mahmoud Suleiman Yaqout for "A Dictionary of Linguistic Science Terminology in Arab Heritage," while second place went to Dr Zaher Mohammed Obaid for "The Detailed Dictionary of Poetic Necessities," reflecting renewed interest in classical and technical terminology.
Addressing the audience, jury member Dr Samir Al Daroubi delivered a committee statement, extending deep thanks to the Ruler of Sharjah for sponsoring the award and describing it as one of the most prestigious Arabic and international awards dedicated to the fields of the Arabic language, with wide recognition among specialists and research institutions.
Dr Samir Al Daroubi pointed to the diversity and volume of submissions received in the eighth edition. Al Daroubi highlighted the efforts of the jury members in reaching the results with objectivity and precision across all submitted research papers, noting the richness of the entries and the role played by careful academic evaluation in selecting the winning works.

In his remarks, Al Daroubi also praised the role and continued support of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, whose close follow-up contributed significantly to the success of the award’s eighth edition. Concluding his remarks, Dr. Al Daroubi affirmed that the award has attained a distinguished standing among Arabic and international awards, thanks to the vision and guidance of Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.
Winner Dr. Mahmoud Suleiman Yaqout then delivered a speech on behalf of the honoured researchers, expressing his highest gratitude and appreciation to the Ruler of Sharjah and to those responsible for the award, commending their great efforts and support that culminated in the honour of meeting and being recognised by the Ruler of Sharjah.
Dr Mahmoud Suleiman Yaqout also thanked the scholars who evaluated the competing works. He also conveyed his deep appreciation to the scholars who devoted their sincere efforts to evaluating the submitted works and determining the winners, noting that such academic scrutiny strengthens trust in the award’s outcomes and encourages more rigorous research in future editions.
Speaking about the wider influence of the prize, Yaqout added that the award is highly anticipated by researchers in linguistic sciences across their various branches. He noted that the announcement of the award generates positive scholarly engagement through serious research, studies, and dictionaries submitted by researchers, enriching academic research in the language of the Holy Qur’an.
Sharjah Linguistic Lexical Studies Award future themes for 2026
Alongside honouring the current winners, organisers revealed the themes for the ninth edition of the Sharjah Linguistic Lexical Studies Award, set for 2026. The Linguistic Studies category will focus on "Linguistic and Rhetorical Studies in Qur’anic Discourse," covering grammatical, morphological, rhetorical, lexicographical, stylistic and modern linguistic approaches that examine Qur’anic verses.
The Lexicographical Studies category for 2026 will address "Modern Lexicographical Studies," encompassing all classified research and studies on linguistic and human dictionaries produced by lexicographers in the modern era. This direction aims to document and analyse contemporary dictionary work, alongside heritage-based efforts highlighted in the current edition’s winning studies.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi received several publications and commemorative gifts from the winners, posed for group photographs with the honourees, and wished them continued success and perseverance in serving the Arabic language, reinforcing the award’s role as a consistent support for serious linguistic and lexicographical research.
