Sharjah Libraries Literature Award Forum Celebrates 24th Edition And Recognises Research Excellence

The Sharjah Libraries' Literature Award Forum began with a ceremony honouring the winners of its 24th edition. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, presented awards to researchers from various countries. The event also featured a significant agreement between Sharjah Public Libraries and the American University of Sharjah Library to enhance information access.

During the forum, Eman Bushalibi, Director of SPL, emphasised the century-long legacy of Sharjah’s libraries in fostering creativity. She noted that these institutions remain crucial for knowledge and innovation, supported by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi. Bushalibi highlighted a 37% increase in research submissions this year.

Winners of Sharjah Libraries Literature Award Announced

The award's impact was evident with a 75% rise in participating countries and a 49% growth in researchers. Joint research papers increased by 120%, showcasing the prize's role in advancing scientific research. The "Best Research" award went to Dr Ibrahim Abd Elhady and Dr Maha Loay Hatem from Alexandria University for their work on green sustainability in public libraries.

In other categories, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library in the UAE was recognised as the ‘Best Library and Information Institution’. The Omani Research Repository (Shoaa) from Sultan Qaboos University received the ‘Best Project in the Field’ award. These accolades highlight efforts to promote library excellence across diverse regions.

The MoU between SPL and AUS Library aims to broaden resource access, promote lifelong learning, and drive innovation. Key initiatives include interlibrary resource sharing and joint professional development. This collaboration focuses on enhancing digital literacy and ensuring equitable access to information for all users.

The forum featured three panel discussions. The first panel explored how public libraries serve as cultural meeting places. Speakers included Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Ali, and Jumaa Al Dhaheri. They discussed libraries' roles as custodians of national memory, citing Sharjah as an exemplary model.

Libraries Adapting to Modern Challenges

The second discussion focused on transforming traditional roles into shaping awareness and identity. Ali Al Matrooshi and Jamal Al Shehhi highlighted knowledge's role in cultural dialogue. They praised Sharjah for its cultural exchange efforts and stressed translating global literature into Arabic to enrich local understanding.

The final panel addressed challenges faced by modern libraries like SPL amid technological advancements. Dr Nabhan Al Harrasi and Professor Moatasem El Gheriani discussed maintaining traditional roles while embracing new technologies. They emphasised intellectual property legislation's importance in fostering creativity.

The day concluded with presentations by first-place winners who showcased their research's significance in advancing library practices. They discussed standards applied to address modern challenges effectively, underscoring the award’s role in promoting innovative solutions within library systems worldwide.
