Sharjah International Book Fair: A Catalyst For The Future Of Emirati Publishing
The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) is a significant event in the cultural and literary landscape, according to Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA). He described it as more than just a festival, highlighting its role in fostering creativity, knowledge sharing, and cultural exchange. "It’s not just a festival; it’s a platform for creativity, knowledge, and cultural exchange that connects voices shaping our national identity and propels them onto the global literary stage," he said.
Al Kous credited H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for founding the fair. This initiative has significantly influenced the UAE's publishing sector by establishing a thriving platform for storytelling and cultural dialogue. Since its inception, Emirati publishing has grown from a few dozen publishers in 2009 to hundreds of notable figures today.

The fair's global recognition as the top event for buying and selling publishing rights over three consecutive years underscores its importance. It has provided Emirati publishers with international exposure and market access. Al Kous praised this achievement, noting how it elevates local literature to reach global audiences while maintaining high standards.
The SIBF also plays a crucial role in nurturing Emirati talent, especially among women. The event offers them a platform to showcase their creativity through leading publishing houses and distinguished literary works. This opportunity has allowed Emirati women to make significant contributions to the publishing industry.
Moreover, Al Kous emphasised the fair's contribution to promoting a vibrant reading culture in the Emirates. "The fair also plays a key role in fostering a vibrant reading culture in the Emirates," he added. "It has created a dynamic environment that connects publishers, authors, and readers, making it a fertile ground for Emirati creativity to flourish."
As Al Kous concluded his remarks, he reflected on the future of UAE’s publishing industry. He expressed confidence that the legacy of SIBF will continue to serve as an important window through which Sharjah and the Emirates' cultural projects are viewed globally.
