Sharjah Heritage Institute Highlights Emirati Culture At Thessaloniki Book Fair

The Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) is showcasing its cultural and academic contributions at the Sharjah Pavilion during the twentieth edition of the Thessaloniki International Book Fair in Greece. The event, held from 16th to 19th May, marks Sharjah as the first Arab honorary guest at the fair, highlighting its significant presence through the Sharjah Book Authority and other institutions.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, Chairman of the SIH, emphasised the importance of Sharjah's participation in this global cultural event. He noted that it underscores Sharjah's esteemed international status in preserving culture and heritage. Under the leadership of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Sharjah has become a notable landmark in cultural and scientific communication.

Sharjah Heritage at Thessaloniki Fair

Al-Musallam stated, "The deep celebration of the participation of the Emirate of Sharjah and its institutions in this major global cultural event confirms the prestigious international position that Sharjah has achieved in preserving culture and heritage." He added that this participation aligns with SIH's ongoing commitment to engaging in various international events to present Emirati cultural heritage effectively.

The SIH's participation includes a variety of departments and centres affiliated with the institute. These include live demonstrations of traditional women's crafts, folk costumes for men, women, and children, and an Emirati hospitality corner offering coffee and popular sweets like dates, bethitha, and khunfaroush. These displays reflect Emirati generosity and respect.

Visitors to the fair have shown great interest in the Emirati folk arts presented by the Sharjah National Folk Dance Troupe. Performances include traditional dances such as Ayyala, Liwa, Medima, Hibban, and Nuban. These performances have been well-received, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the UAE.

Engagement with Global Institutions

The SIH aims to provide rich spaces for interaction between visitors and local heritage landmarks. This initiative connects attendees to the deep roots of Emirati national identity. Additionally, it meets the interests of readers and cultural heritage enthusiasts through various publications and specialised books.
