Sharjah Crown Prince Launches 24th SICFAB To Enhance Biodiversity Conservation Efforts

H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the 24th Sharjah International Conservation Forum for Arabian Biodiversity (SICFAB). This four-day event, organised by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, is being held at Sharjah Safari in Al Dhaid and will continue until 6th February.

The forum's primary focus this year is on examining reptile species in the Arabian Peninsula. Building on a study from 2012, findings reveal an increase in unique species from 89 to 141. This highlights the region’s rich biodiversity and underscores the necessity for ongoing conservation efforts.

He praised past efforts shaping the forum and identified key improvement areas like managing nature reserves and promoting eco-tourism. Seddon also highlighted marine mammals' plight and proposed a network to monitor distressed marine mammals.

Over 130 international experts and researchers specialising in environmental science are participating in this year’s forum. The event aims to address significant environmental issues and enhance understanding of ecosystems to better protect endangered species.

The forum includes various sessions covering crucial topics such as monitoring marine life and training future researchers in environmental science. It emphasises collaboration between academic institutions and environmental organisations to tackle biodiversity challenges in the Arabian Peninsula.

Recognition of Conservation Efforts

During the event, H.H. Sheikh Sultan received a certificate acknowledging Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve's inclusion in the IUCN Green List. This recognition highlights Sharjah’s commitment to effective management of protected areas and adherence to best practices in conservation.

She stressed that this forum marks a significant step in Sharjah’s environmental initiatives, showcasing its dedication to biodiversity protection and collaboration on environmental issues.
