Sharjah Ruler Establishes Creative Quarter To Support Innovation And Design Industries

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has enacted an Emiri Decree to establish the Sharjah Creative Quarter (SCQ). This initiative aims to create a hub for innovation and creativity with legal authority and financial independence. The SCQ is fully owned by the Sharjah government and is designed to support creative industries and talents in various design fields.

The SCQ's headquarters will be located in University City, Sharjah. However, it may expand to other areas within the emirate if directed by the Ruler. The SCQ will collaborate with designated government and private entities as assigned by its Head to achieve its goals.

Sharjah Creative Quarter Established for Innovation

The main objectives of the SCQ include creating a central hub for talents and professionals in fields such as fashion, jewellery, product design, and handicrafts. It also aims to attract leading regional brands while promoting modern design practices. Additionally, it plans to provide manufacturing spaces and cultural hubs to support creatives and engage visitors.

Another significant goal is to showcase innovative design brands and contemporary fashion within the region. By doing so, the SCQ seeks to celebrate creativity and foster a vibrant community of designers and artisans.

The SCQ will partner with local, regional, and international organisations within the design sector. It will offer facilities and services aimed at attracting prominent brands while fostering design innovation. Developing joint programs among entities under its scope is also part of its mandate.

Engaging designers, artisans, and manufacturers in relevant fields is crucial for the SCQ's success. To achieve this, it will seek technical and administrative assistance from specialised local authorities. Organising exhibitions, workshops, and events is another key activity planned by the SCQ.

Operational Structure of the SCQ

The leadership of the SCQ will be under a Head appointed by Emiri Decree. Daily operations will be managed by a Director appointed by the Head, supported by sufficient staff. The Director’s responsibilities are defined by the Head to ensure smooth functioning.

The decree also outlines financial resources, fee exemptions, executive decisions, and implementation procedures necessary for effective operation. This comprehensive framework ensures that all aspects of running the SCQ are covered efficiently.

The SCQ has been granted authority to form contracts, agreements, and partnerships with relevant institutions upon approval. Establishing committees or task forces may also be undertaken to assist in achieving its objectives effectively.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as directed by the Head of SCQ. This flexibility allows for adaptation to emerging needs or opportunities within the creative sector.
