Sharjah Calligraphy Forum Adopts Mizan Theme For 12th Edition

The Sharjah Calligraphy Forum will return for its 12th edition next October, with the theme "Mizan" (Balance) guiding new artworks. The event will run for two months and will gather calligraphers from the UAE, the wider Arab region and many other countries.

Organised by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture, the forum continues to focus on Arabic calligraphy as a core art form. The programme will include diverse creative works that highlight both traditional and modern approaches to this visual language.

Sharjah Calligraphy Forum Adopts Mizan

The organising committee chose "Mizan" as the theme for this edition during a meeting at the department. The session was chaired by Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs and Director of the forum, with members Khalid Al Jallaf, Khalid Al Saei and Taj Alsir Hassan attending.

Explaining the choice of theme, Al Qaseer said that "Mizan" offers broad artistic possibilities for participating calligraphers. The concept allows artists to explore balance in form, content and style, which can enhance visual harmony and give their calligraphic pieces a distinct artistic presence.

The forum is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Al Qaseer stated that the event grows with every edition, reaching a global level through this steady support and clear artistic vision.

According to Al Qaseer, the 12th edition arrives in a renewed format that reinforces Sharjah’s role in supporting Arabic calligraphy as an authentic Arab art. The forum also maintains its cultural message, rooted in the historical and Islamic importance associated with calligraphic practice.

Sharjah Calligraphy Forum applications, timeline and Arabic calligraphy submissions

The organising committee will start sending invitations this month to calligraphers and other artists worldwide. Participation will also open through the department’s official website and social media platforms. Applicants must submit personal information, details of proposed works and a biography through an electronic form.

Electronic applications will be accepted until the end of May. After that date, submissions are expected to undergo selection by the committee. The chosen works will then be prepared for display during the two-month programme in October, completing the forum’s international calligraphy line-up.
