Sharjah Archaeology Authority Concludes Successful Exhibition At Colosseum In Rome
The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) recently concluded its international exhibition, "From Sharjah to Rome via the Spice Route," held at Curia Julia in Rome's Colosseum Archaeological Park. This event, running from February to May 2025, attracted over 600,000 visitors globally. It highlighted the historical connections between Sharjah and the Roman world, focusing on key archaeological sites like Mleiha and Dibba Al-Hisn along ancient trade routes.
Visitors were treated to an interactive documentary film produced by SAA. This film depicted commercial and cultural exchanges during the Roman period between Rome and the eastern Arabian Peninsula. The accurate portrayal of economic life and maritime routes received praise from both visitors and historians for its visual storytelling.

Eisa Yousif, Director-General of SAA, remarked on the exhibition's success in reintroducing Sharjah to a global audience. He noted that hosting over 600,000 visitors in three months underscores growing interest in Sharjah’s archaeological heritage. The exhibition offered immersive experiences alongside artefacts, reinforcing a dignified cultural image of Sharjah on the global stage.
Yousif also highlighted that this initiative aligns with His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi's vision. His Highness aims to strengthen Sharjah’s cultural identity and promote dialogue while encouraging global openness. His ongoing support for culture was crucial in achieving this international recognition.
A significant feature of the exhibition was an academic lecture involving Emirati and Italian scholars. They discussed historical links between Sharjah and the Mediterranean world, focusing on advanced heritage conservation technologies and archaeological research methods.
Moreover, official meetings took place between SAA and Colosseum Archaeological Park management. These discussions aimed at exchanging expertise and establishing long-term cooperation in research, exhibitions, and training initiatives.
Innovative Display Techniques
The exhibition showcased over 110 rare artefacts from major sites across Sharjah using augmented reality (AR) and 3D visualisation technologies. These innovative techniques provided visitors with an educational experience that deepened their understanding of Sharjah’s rich heritage.
This event underscored the importance of historical ties between regions through trade routes like the Silk and Spice Routes. It also demonstrated how modern technology can enhance cultural appreciation by bringing history to life for a diverse audience.
