Sharjah Aquarium Highlights Conservation Achievements On World Oceans Day

Sharjah Aquarium, under the Sharjah Museums Authority, has become a prominent centre for recreation and education, significantly contributing to environmental awareness and marine life conservation since its inception in 2008. On World Oceans Day, observed on 8th June, Rashid Al Shamsi, Curator of Sharjah Aquarium, highlighted the aquarium's year-round educational programmes targeting all age groups.

"Throughout the year, the Aquarium offers various educational programmes targeting all age groups, from students to researchers and the general public," said Al Shamsi. These programmes include educational tours and interactive workshops focusing on the marine environment and the necessity of preserving it and its biodiversity.

Aquarium's Oceans Day Conservation

The aquarium's efforts are underscored by numerous awareness campaigns, initiatives, and participation in scientific research aimed at protecting endangered marine species. These initiatives also focus on improving the environmental conditions of the oceans and encouraging sustainable behaviours among the public.

Sharjah Museums Authority, represented by Sharjah Aquarium, is joining the international community in celebrating World Oceans Day by participating in the "Beauty of the Marine Environment" initiative in collaboration with Khorfakkan University. This participation reflects its commitment to protecting the marine environment and continuing efforts towards a sustainable future for coming generations.

The aquarium achieves its goals through various initiatives, workshops, campaigns, and unique programmes under its social responsibility initiative "Because We Care." This initiative aims to educate the public on the importance of preserving the marine environment and raise awareness about pollution dangers caused by irresponsible behaviours.

Notable programmes include the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Release Program, an annual carnival, and an annual "Clean Up" campaign. Regular workshops allow visitors to feed fish and touch marine creatures, bringing them closer to the marine environment and encouraging better protection efforts.

Community Engagement

As part of its initiative targeting different community members, including Khorfakkan University students, the aquarium offers two workshops: one for families and another for university students. The event also features characters interacting with the public, interactive screens within the aquarium, displays of diverse fish species, and entertaining activities such as face painting.

The celebration includes a lecture by Khorfakkan University titled "Under the Waves: Exploring the Hidden World of Coral Reefs in the UAE." During their visit to the aquarium, university students participate in various activities and engage in a specialised scientific lecture on marine and ocean environments.
